Army Reserve Sniper ?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi, I've been looking at all my options but I was wondering if it was possible to become a sniper in the TA, possibly with an Infantry FSG? I have searched the forums for answers but I only come up with things dated like 2006, which I'm guessing the TA/Reserves are considerably different now.

    Thanks a lot
  2. Join infantry first, go sniper later, specialist course I believe
  3. TA don't have an FSG and as far as I know, no job role as sniper. Not even marksman.
  4. Sniper is not available with in the TA/AR!

But give it a few years and it might come around again. Give it a few years after that (enough time to issue the kit, attend the courses and gain some degree of competence) and they will decide it is not required and remove the role again.

    Repeat ad infinitum

  6. 4th Mercians F Company have an FSG mate,

    Ok thanks guys
  7. Back in the day (1991/3) 6 and 7 Bn's Royal Anglian used to have snipers but then they used to have Recce Platoons with heavily armed land rovers as well.

Bee there, watched the trainees queue up for badges and then get to TAC to watch rifles back loaded!
  9. TA (Sorry Reserves) do not have the time to be fully trained as a sniper. The nearest they had to it was sharpshooter and they carried the L96 Sniper Rifle. Cant see the Reserves ever getting this role due to the time constraints

Of course, speak to someone who has done a sharpshooter course, and he will assure you that he is a sniper!

Personally I didn't think 2 weeks camp or spring cadre was enough to get such a demanding course under the belt, the reg course was a full on 6 weeks with very little time off at all.
  12. It has been known for certain TA to blag themselves onto Regular courses

Skill maintenance was and remains a critical issue

IMO most TA 'snipers' are generally a very rare exception rather than the norm. It is not a TA role (even though some lucky few will tell you it is)
  13. And 5 both of the snipers in my old company were both ex-regular Snipers

I think I heard mention once that the CO needs to have done a course in the use of a sniper platoon before one is formed in a bn?

  15. Can't see why; he doesn't need to have done an AT course to have Javelin, nor does he have had to done any "blow the shit out of various bits of Salisbury Plain" courses to use mortars / artillery.
