Army may recruit from Jamaica

BBC

The British Army is considering a recruitment drive in Jamaica to help boost its depleted numbers.

Figures show the UK military is currently 4,900 short of its fully-trained requirement, with the Army needing 3,330 more troops.

The military accepts Commonwealth and Irish applications but does not normally recruit overseas, except for Gurkhas from Nepal.

The MoD said its plans for Jamaica were "still at an early stage".

There are currently 600 Jamaicans serving in the Army.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman added: "The Armed Forces are proud to recruit high quality soldiers from countries with close historical ties."

We are already there!!! Have been recieving these guys for the last year and a bit.

OPT just back from Belize and St Lucia where another 300 were recruited.
Exactly. This is an extremely odd story. Despite the MOD saying "its plans for Jamaica were 'still at an early stage'" we have been aware of this for some time from open sources, and saw no reason to object.

Maybe they should make the Army more attractive to people in this country.

How is recruiting in Jamaica, news , and "at an early stage"??

Sorry, I'm confused

Are they proposing a new exercise as well? I'd call it "Red Stripe'" or similar.

If you want to find fine young potential recruits to soldier , I'd suggest doing a roadshow to the public schools with an existing strong military ethos like Knox , Mannings etc.

Surely Somalia, Sudan or Congo..... Oh you meant youth recruits as opposed to soldiers, my bad.

The state school used to be the ideal location as a way of offering those less fortunate to climb out of their social/family circumstance, both sides then benefited. How much has that been restricted now since the outcry a few weeks ago from teachers?

why don't we just hand a rifle to the illegal immigrants we catch and send them to Afghanistan for a tour. After that they can be UK citizens

Great another load of potential headaches for troop management, all with chips as big as everest on their shoulders, remember Fiji!!
Before you all start there are some good Fijians but there are a lot of bad ones that cause no end of discipline problems, do we really need this again?
Make the Army more attractive to the potential recruits from this country, increase pay, better standards of accomodation, better access to education and welfare facilities.

Just a thought from this recruiter but then again what do i know!!
