Army ‘to be cut by 20,000’ if No 10 plan is approved

Sorry. I've been watching you go in about this for a while and decided not to get involved, but this statement really is mental.

In what world are we doing strategic raiding? What possible purpose does that have for a modern democracy if it isn't part of a wider operation with much more ambitious aims?
what world?

our new, no more fools errands entangled in sand people’s millennia old civil and religious wars, world.

tell them to stop, or else.
if they don’t - break things pour encourage les autres.

Unfortunately, Germany as a strategic giant has caused a lot of people a lot of grief in the past 156 years.
I like my 14 years there

Soon wars will mostly be fought by private companies such as Blackwater & the likes. Companies will just sell arms to those. You'll probably still have a small Army with drone operators and people commanding AI & cyber warfare specialists. No doubt there will be a few spies & snipers/assassins as well. For any large scale conflicts - just use nukes. That's the way wars are going - Hi Tech and private contractors, so no need to keep a full time Army in paid employment 24/7.
That's what the nerds would have you think anyway - in reality, when the shit hits the fan, we will be fooked but at least we can kill the nerds first and the lefty tree huggers before we are all killed or enslaved by China or nuked by North Korea.
Honourable East India Company?
Or
Honourable China Company

Thats quite a interesting read.

The part about maintaining a large defense estate is quite pertinent.

Just look how many training areas the Army still maintain. Alot of them are absolutely terrible.

Getting rid of some of the estate would free up money to improve the more useful training areas.

Anyone been to Otterburn recently? Massive training area, the RA appear en mass once a year for training. However the actual camp is a dive. Binning certain training areas like Kirkcudbright and using the money saved to actually make better infrastructure and some soldiers having to deal with 1960s accommodation.
Everything the MoD sells off is always put into the Defence Buget. Look at Chelsea Kaserne

I'm pleased. Most people forget that that they may have cause the French a lot of Grief-actually we had very little gripe with them other than their desire to be a bit like us. Now let's go and occupy France for a hundred years or so.
I'm sure Oswald would be proud of you.

Oh hear we effing go..!

How much to you think you would get for the Otterburn estate then..? Its basically hill farm fit only for sheep.. which we currently rent out! If you were to sell the land, would you care to estimate how much it would cost to demine and render safe...?

... and what are you moaning about the camp for? Why are you there? It's a training area.. you should be out there shivering in a hole in the ground!

And what flashes of insight about Kirkudbright are you basing your assessment on? You are aware that 80% of the training area consists of a chunk of the Atlantic/Irish Sea? And again, how much do you think we would get for a bunch of gorse and sea cliffs in that part of the world?

Some may say your knowledge and understanding is comparable with Whitehall's finest... you have just proved it! If the estate you are referring to had any realistic possibility of raising a bent sheckle it would have gone years ago!

And that's illegal.

I'm not sure you have a good grip on the modern world.

well, please explain how we went and broke Iraq after telling Sadaam to cease and desist.
or do you cling to the rather curious belief wer3 were freeing the Iraqis by destroying their country?. Other places like Syria are available

much bigger savings to be had.

sell off the biggest Fleet of horses in any Army, 505 horses, ceremonial, tourists for the amusement of, along with all the stables and farriers.

seriously, it’s 2020, and the Army still has farriers.

For neither of those conflicts was the reason for going to war 'we asked them to stop doing something but they didn't so we went in to break things'.

ah, so we destroyed the late Ghadaffi Ducks Air Force and sunk his Navy because it was a credible threat to the UK?

Its been pointed out repeatedly that this would achieve nothing - If the Public duties requirement goes so does associated funding - so you've saved a few grand to chop from defence and spend on lesbian dwarf diversity outreach officers or similar bollox

Very much agreed on the overheads for maintaining out of date unused infrastructure, if only there was some sort of get out clause or immunity that applied to the government or to use its old name, the crown?

A bigger issue is the MODs determination to shoot itself in the foot when it comes to selling stuff off - the Slade park barracks debacle comes to mind.

It will also be interesting to see what the commercial market is for mass property builds?
Who knows, maybe in BoJo's New Deal reboot, he won't purchase brownfield sites, just re-purpose the unused areas for "build, build, build"

Slight thread drift, I did like @jim30 's pop at certain BBC defence correspondents who've been acting like twunts.

Also no. There are other reasons to go to war, and there are other ways of executing it beyond 'raiding'.

They pale into insignificance when compared withe the number of stables and saddle clubs squatting on MoD land, draining MoD utilities and the glorious black economy misemploying numerous soldiers to pander to the recreation of a selfish, privileged few.
