Cynics might almost think the role is filled already but have to go through the motions....

Not very good pay, considering responsibility, skill set and fact it's located in The Smoke.
Money's not a motivator for the type of expert needed here, just knowing they are working with the worlds finest is caffeine enough......

I do see your point - pride in job etc - but it's too often used to justify underpaying public servants. I mean the ones doing the important stuff, not the Corporate Performance Appraisal Directors, etc.
