Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Telegraph link

Whilst I am all for better links and understanding with the public in general, the thought of losing , almost certainly, a summer weekend and all the bs rehearsals does not fill me with joy.

  2. Was it wanted? No. Is anyone bovvered? No. Would I give a shoite if it was a public holiday? Yes, 'cause I'd be on double bubble. Cynical? Yes. Next YARGI to the front of the queue please.

  3. broon is keen on it as it will cost nothing (other than the time of the soldiers - which is overhead so it makes no difference) and he thinks it will hide the contempt he has for our armed forces.

    Ski.

  4. With you on this one. Makes him look good, but fuucks around the forces for a number of weeks leading up to it...Why does he not make armed forces day like this;
    1. Day off for all non duty members of HMF
    2. 10% pay bonus for that day.Across the board.
    3. NOW THIS IS WHERE IT GETS TRICKY, free booze if you show MOD90 ? wORTH A TRY???

  6. If it is a Public Holiday then I'm all for it. Otherwise it is just another bit of cyncial spin from Labour. Let's see if it ever happens.

  7. Would it be a Forces Day where all military personnel have to parade in front of the public on the drill squares and in the streets? Which of course will need policing, so triple time for the bacon? A public holiday for everybody except those who it's for?

In BuggerAllistan the Armed Forces day would be a public holiday on which all units of the Armed Forces regular and reserve would have to participate in public event - be it an open day, a parade etc.

The 3 days immediately following the Armed Forces day would be a general stand down for the Armed Forces and commanders would be required to show evidence that anyone on essential duty on those days had had 3 other consecutive days leave within a month either side of the Armed Forces day.

Reservist and service family members working for the government would be granted the same leave. Employers of service persons families and employers of reservists would be encouraged to give them at least 1 day additional leave. My Minister of Defence (a full time appointment) would hold press conferences to name and shame employers who do not co-operate.

Of course in BuggerAllistan the government supports the Armed Forces!

  9. C'mon Lads. he has given you all a day off at the week end. Fair enough.

What are you moaning about. Cor blimey. :D :D

It's not about the day off - it's about a the nation - lead by it's Government showing support for it's armed forces.

Part of the reason that support for the Armed Forces is patchy is because of the lukewarm support we get from the Government. ('Lukewarm support' is euphemism for 'barely concealed contempt')

  11. Might be an idea to ask the people who it affects most. And better still, offer options - Civvy-in-green might have a point.

(Yes, I know. Who am I kidding...?)

  12. *Cynicism gain switch to '10'*

Yerrrsss - and it's a short step from here to 'Birthday of Dear Leader', '10th Anniversary of Colonic Irrigation of Great Leader', 'Nation Rejoices as Grand Poobah Has A Dump'.

And exactly what form will this national day of reflection take, I wonder?

    *Cynicism gain switch to 'Standby'*

  13. Couldn't put it better myself to be honest. The RN are putting on a 'Meet the Navy' day on a weekend in late July in Portsmouth. People have already been told to expect to be working that weekend.

Whilst the idea of an Armed Forces Day is appealling, in practice it will involve getting fcuked about for rehearsals for at least 2 weeks beforehand and having to be on duty for an entire weekend so people who aren't in the forces can get lashed up and forget what the original intention of the Armed Forces Day was for (and breathe). :x

  14. So what do we want ? How does the "community" actually show support or whatever?

    - Bank holiday called Armed Forces Day means a day off for the public but more work for us.
    - RMPs to escort our KIA. That surely can be easily sorted.
    - Better kit. Well yes, but what?
    - Actually getting the kit in theatre?
    - Married Quarters. Where do you start?
    - Pay. We're bankrupt according to the IMF.
    - More big kit. can't get more aircraft according to threads on this site because Boeing are at full tilt producing airframes for the yanks. Hardened vehs are coming into service.
    - Stop p*ssing on out tradtions - yep agreed.
    - Stop seeing the Defence Estate as an unspent bank balance - totally agree.

The public are generally supportive to us if we venture out in uniform but do WE do that enough?

SO what do we actually want?
