This video seems to show the actual damage caused by the collapse on Tuesday. It's drone footage taken from the air above the telescope showing the wreckage which has fallen onto the dish.
Schrodinger's drone? What are the chances of a drone with 20 minute duration being there at the exact place and moment of failure? Here's a video showing the Arecebo telescope actually collapsing. The first part shows a view from the ground, while the second part shows it from the air (using a drone). It's well worth watching.
The collapse was due to lack of maintenance, which in turn was due to lack of money. If the loss of this telescope makes you feel sad, you can console yourself with the thought that the Chinese have built a bigger one which went into service this past January.
The start of the drone footage showed it looking at the cable anchoring points one of the towers. It's quite possible that someone on the site heard some popping or snapping noises coming from the top of the tower and sent the drone up to investigate.Schrodinger's drone?
