Are we going to see riots this summer ?

One thing I've noticed in a lot of filmed interactions is that the US police tend to be very dictatorial in their dealings with the public in general.

It wouldn't have hurt to say 'Please'.

Having said which I'd deffo be fairly quick to oblige a nice policeman waving a gun in my face, I'd still be alive to complain about it later.
Need to attend the 'Dixon of Dock Green Police Academy' ?

Disagree , they`d end up like the British Police , toothless, a suspected criminal should be given orders and they should obey .

I used to say please, then after about say the 30th traffic stop out of out of feck knows how many over the years that I made, you come to realise that a lot of the time you are dealing with some right dumb motherfeckers who just don't want to comply when you ask nicely.

Having to deal with that crap gets real old real fast. It's better and safer to let them know from the start who's in charge of the stop and that fecking around could either land them in jail, hospital or the morgue.

From my pov I have been stopped for speeding about 15 times in Germany and England.
I was always guilty, I never expected the Police to say please as they were doin their job.
However my attitude meant they were also reasonable.
And I have always kept a clean licence.

That's it! All you need do is comply and unless it's something that's constitutes and arrest being made, you'll either get a warning or a ticket and be on your way.

To the people who used to whine about getting a ticket my reply was always the same, you don't want a ticket obey the speed limit. Hell we used to, and the guys today still do, give drivers up to 5MPH leeway over the speed limit.

I have in the past have friends in Traffic.
They were all motorcyclists (how I knew them).
They all had no problem with speed where it was safe and loads of problems where it was not.
Simple, isn't it.

This chart was, I believe, nicked from the FBI by one of their Operatives who later became the VP Security at a company I worked for, and was preached to our security chaps in an attempt to lower the rate of bloodletting when they got involved with the public or members of the workforce who looked at them in the wrong way.

They were warned that unless they could sincerely justify a higher level of reaction than that shown in the chart, they could face sanction. I get the feeling, looking at the Police shootings above, that some of the US police reactions have ..er, bordered on being over-reactive, but I suppose that they are fully aware that some fat sweaty bird in possession of a big gob and stolen goods is also very likely to be in possession of .38 or 9mm metal. Hard choices for the copper, and I favour educating the public in the correct response to these sorts of situation.

The problem here with speeding though, especially on the rural roads is the amount of wildlife we have here. You hit a deer, a bear or and elk at speed and there is a fairly good chance your next stop is the mortuary.

I have seen whole families killed because of speeding and it's heartbreaking especially when there was kids in the car. As for the amount of motorcyclists I've seen killed through speeding after collisions with wildlife, well I've lost count and a lot of the time their collision with an animal was mostly nothing bigger than a raccoon, sometimes even with smaller animals.

I've been retired for around 10 years now, experiences has taught me not to speed, If a speed limit says 25MPH thats the speed I do and usually a couple of MPH under if there are pedestrians/phone zombies around.

Back when I was in the Army, I was on leave and heading back to Germany. I was on the M4 on a quiet Sunday morning with not a lot of traffic around in a brand new Honda Accord that I had owned for just over a week. I had just filled up with petrol and as I was coming out of the petrol station and building up speed, a small roe deer ran out in front of me,

After we hit the deer, the car went from the inside lane, and we hit the crash barrier on the overtaking lane. After hitting the crash barrier we did a complete 360 across all three lanes and came to rest on the hard shoulder, I reckon I hit that deer at 50MPH.

We walked away from that unscathed but even now I dread to think what might have happened if the M4 had been busy that morning.

I've seen that before as well. To me the thing it doesn't take into account is people. A person who starts out compliant during a traffic stop can turn hostile in the blink of an eye when they realise their excuse for speeding isn't cutting the mustard and they are getting a ticket.

The disagree is because a bit of civility often prevents a situation escalating and also gives a fraction of a second more for the suspect to consider their position. @tearsbeforebedtime said, it seems that is the procedure in the US:
I've heard it referred to as ask, tell, make. The film of such events often starts at the tell/make threshold as it make more polarising viewing.
The UK police are no more toothless than before, what they no longer have is the unconditional backing of their superiors.

My boss once told me that he would back me up, without hesitation, in any enforcement I required of the plants I supervised animal welfare, hygiene etc. There was no question of my authority being undermined by my boss

He added that if I was taking the mickey there would be consequences.
