Are laptop cd/dvd drives universal?

  1. Someone i know has this shite laptop where the cd drive no longer works. Its a Packard-Bell Easynote F5275

    What i want to know is will any laptop cd/dvd drive work or are they different?

    laptop components can be proprietary - have you checked the manufacturers website to see if they have any information there about it at all? if not, if it has a USB port you should be able to use an external drive with it.

  4. The underlying cd/dvd drives are all the same shape in my experience.

    However, the bespoke outer shell which usually consists of a couple of metal plates, a faceplate and possibly an adaptor for the connector will need to be removed and replaced with the kit from the old non working drive.

    A small phillips screwdriver is usually required for this fiddly job.
