I wonder was he really poisoned ? I think it was just old age, but it would have been sensible.

States don't generally kill the other side's leaders - you have invested too much in learning abut them to want them replaced.

Arafat's doctors had excluded cancer and poisoning as a cause of his illness but still had not been able to pinpoint the cause, though he said doctors are focusing on digestive tract ailments as the root cause of the coma.

French doctors who carried out tests on the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat discovered no trace of poison. There is no clear diagnosis of the reason for the death, and second the toxicological tests were made and no known poison was found.

The French doctors sent specimens to three different laboratories for standard toxicology tests to detect metals and drugs like barbiturates, opiates and amphetamines. None were detected. The laboratories included the Toxicology Department of the Criminal Division of Physics and Chemistry in the Institute of Criminal Research of the National Gendarmerie; the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Toxicology and Pharmacology at Percy; and the French Army's Radiotoxicology Control Laboratory.

The researchers said Arafat did not suffer the extensive kidney and liver damage they would expect from a poison, although he did have jaundice.

Arafat's personal doctor, Ashraf al-Kurdi, said he believed Arafat was poisoned.

On Swissinfo Swiss lab finds polonium in Arafat samples
...
Darcy Christen, spokesman for Lausanne’s Institute of Radiophysics, confirmed separately to Reuters it had found "surprisingly" high levels of polonium-210 in Arafat's belongings.

But he stressed that clinical symptoms described in Arafat's medical reports were not consistent with polonium-210 and that conclusions could not be drawn as to whether the Palestinian leader was poisoned or not.

In a documentary Al Jazeera indicated that his clothes, toothbrush and headscarf contained abnormal levels of polonium, a rare, highly radioactive element.

Bochud said the only way to confirm the findings would be to exhume Arafat's body to test it for polonium-210.

"But we have to do it quite fast because polonium is decaying, so if we wait too long, for sure, any possible proof will disappear," he told Al Jazeera.
Arafat's widow Suha said she would ask for Arafat's body - buried in the West Bank town of Ramallah, seat of the Palestinian self-rule authority - to be exhumed.

"We have to go further and exhume Yasser Arafat's body to reveal the truth to all the Muslim and Arab world,” she told the documentary.
Odd story, a simple Hellfire would be more typical of the Israelis, there are other folks who notoriously favor polonium.

Not many people are aware that Arafat was buried wearing a replica Paul Gascoigne footy shirt. Apparently in his will it stated he wished to be buried in the Gazza strip.
