Anyone started a new YouTube channel about gaming ?

Got made redundant a few weeks ago and being pretty picky about only applying for the perfect role... And since I was getting bored being stuck at home playing computer games ( who would have thought a lifelong geek would get tired of gaming ??? :) ), decided to have a go at starting a youtube channel about gaming.

Anyone else done this ? How did you find it ? There are so many "how to get a gazillion subs in a week" video's that give lots of less than effective advice. Not really expecting to become an internet sensation, but as much as anything, it's interesting so learn something new.

Gaming channels are notoriously hard to get going as there are so many channels that already get early access and free copies for day one release most game developers wont touch you with a 10 foot pole before you have 1000+ subscribers so you'll find yourself having to buy each title in order to make any sort of impact.

I do tech reviews and drone flying and photography on my channel and after 2 1/2 yrs I still only have 300 subs (which isn't an issue for me as I have never really been bothered about the numnbers) but I have spent at least £3000 on the channel to date

Unless your nick is PewdiePie, don't bother.

Have a friend who does it - she earns about 700 a month, but basically spends all day streaming. I suspect you’ll find it much harder to create that small amount of revenue as a man.

Its Funny how so many of the channels giving that advice dont have a gazillion subscribers themselves

my manboobs haven't done me any favours when it comes to tipping and donations

I subscribed to this game channel which is nearly all about the Total War series. I have no idea how he can do five or six hour livestreams of whichever game he's playing, then also find the time to do Top 5 lists and "saving your disaster campaign" videos as well.

I don't mind playing the occasional game, but I'd much rather surf for porn if I'm in front of my computer.

Thanks for the replies :)

I figured I would try and go the Belle Delphine route and sell my bathwater, but who would have thought that no-one wants a 51 year old guys bathwater, even when I throw in grey pubies for free !

YouTube and twitch are definitely more of a career option if you're a young woman and don't mind working your subscribers into a frenzy, that's for sure ! Oh to have my time again, would self identify as a woman, and jam my moobs into a tight, cleavage revealing top and stream with my ( hideously mangled after running in boots ) toes in camera shot for all those foot fetishists out there !

To be honest, it's more about keeping me occupied / less insane that I might otherwise be if I sat round in a string vest and joggers all day playing computer games. I'm actually enjoying learning more about producing videos, audio, creating a brand etc... I think I just like to do new stuff.

The channel link is below. Feel free to take a look. My first priority is working out how to do better audio. Got a new mike coming today so will be playing around with that. I want to set myself goals, none of which are about making money to be honest... Sort out the video and audio quality, get 100 subs, work on making my dulcet tones less dulcet etc... More than anything it would be nice to actually make something that people like watching which is actually more important to me than the subs ( channelling my inner narcissist here !. Deffo not expecting to make any money from this.

The channel link is below. Feel free to take a look, comment etc... Just remember, it's not Arrse… I'm now a youtube snowflake and might meltdown if people are mean to me in the comments ! :)

Cheers,

Sammers.

Some of the games reviewers I watch say the same thing ( Worth A Buy for example ), and the fact that if you are honest about how bad games are in your reviews you get ignored by the game publishers.

What's your channel name ? Sounds like the sort of thing that would interest me.

Damnit he's stolen my idea !!! :) My first three vids are a lets play of Medieval TW2. I subsequently found out that let's play vids are notoriously bad for growing a channel so I need to make some catchier vids with more pop, bang, and shazoom !

I've just looked at the link. My opinion...

I am not an avid gamer but, if I felt I could learn from it, or delve into nostalgia I would continue watching. I was brought up on ZX Spectrum 48k, speccy 128 and then Amiga. In your intro to spoon of truth, personally, I reckon it would have been better to screenshot clips of games from each system you have experienced as you mentioned them. That's just my opinion though.

I wish you the best of luck mate.
Personally...I enjoy watching the many many channels of muppets eating 70yr old ratpacks :)

Edit - The little chance I get to "game" is either on X-Plane 11 or... Battle of Wesnoth on my ancient porn laptop!
Have Homeworld remasterd on steam on PC too. Keep meaning to get back into it but...

Further edit: I think video tutorials, as opposed to showing the actual gameplay, showing mistakes that can be made also, very informative. I only have X-plane Cold & dark startup procedures for steam gauge boeing 757s etc as a reference though.
Far better to see how it is done, as opposed to "just playing the game textbook".
I think you've pretty much nailed that with Medievil.

You might want to pay your GP a visit, vis a vis depression.
