Any Mercedes Benz drivers - Sat Nav

I've just bought an E class 220 CDI - 63 Plate - at auction, and very nice it is too. My first MB with lots of toys.

30k on the clock and very nice condition too. However it's without it's SatNav. I've had a google and I can pick up if I want the Becker unit on eBay and the like for about £300.

My question - Is it worth it? I'm not usually a sat nav man myself, preferring map and compass or google maps on my smartphone if I'm really stuck. However the current mrs_mush has a spanking new Picanto with sat nav and the few times I've driven it for a distance I must confess I could come around to the idea of someone other than mrs_mush telling me which exit on the roundabout to take.

The POI (speed cameras and petrol stations) has actually been quite useful too.

So is it worth shelling out for the Becker, I'm probably going to hang on to the car for about 7 years or so (or until the bills get excessive. I do between 8-30k miles pa depending on contracts and if I'm working in London or not, and usually take a driving holiday in Europe most summers.

Anyone with 1st hand experiences -I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

I have had a Merc and I didnt like the Sat Nav but I might just be a fook-wit with who couldn't work it properly. IMHO I think you can't go wrong with a high end Garmin or similar with traffic that works and all the maps updated for life even if you do have an in built unit.

If it's the unit that doesn't accept full uk postcodes don't bother, they're shit. I use my iPhone maps as it's much more reliable.
I've complained bitterly to the dealer and to the chief executive of Mercedes uk but got nowhere.
I saw a guy with a 64 plate recently with a tomtom asked him if the newer model was better than the one in my 12 plate he said no, he had to turn it on to use his phone though.
Mine has taken me off motorways to send me around roundabouts to direct me back on. It's taken me almost to Poersmouth instead of Aldershot. It can't find my home address but takes me somewhere close by. When I'd to do a presentation at a meeting in Doncaster it took me to the great north road and told me I'd reached my destination. It even knew the hotel name I was stating at in Ieper but took me to the bus station car park. They're truly shite.

Waze. Free and saved my a few points on my license thanks to users flagging mobile cameras
Waze has only let me down once, it thought that a private house with a name rather than a number was on the middle of the A3!
The best route was across West London when on the way to an appointment and the A40 was shut, together with surrounding roads following an incident. I arrived 5 minutes late.
Not bad for free!

I used to like waze, but it's recently become quite crap. Freezing up, closing down as soon as you select a destination.
It's real time updates from other drivers is great (when it works)

Thanks all for the speedy and informative responses. I had heard rumours that MB's becker unit was a bit shoite but thought I'd see if there were any 1st hand views (thanks @jarrod248 )

Worked great in Germany. Using the part post code, you find your street, but it takes you elsewhere. I believe there's an upgrade now to include full post codes at a cost. It's not worth the cost in my opinion. They must've known from the start it couldn't be much use. Oh the dealer updates it at services but it's from a disc as roads change it doesn't until the next service. The car is fantastic and really that's my only gripe.

Agreed, I've had Beemers and Audis before but this is my first Benz and it seems pretty damn good so far. I use a local garage that specialises in European cars, German in particular. Any reason as to why I should visit a main dealer ?

Would a proper mapping app on your phone be good enough ? I bought one that puts the maps on a SD card and just listening to it chunter on about turns coming up and suchlike gives me all I need. Of course if you feel the need to peer at the screen you're into the nause of some type of stand.

I had my C200 diesel serviced at an independent with no drama. But always worth checking with MB direct as sometimes they were competitive and would do a collect and drop service. Shop around!

The breakdown cover is free if it's serviced by them, that's the only reason I can think of if the warranty has expired.
Has it got the sport mode? That's great fun.

We've got family Green Flag cover and I guess with it being Jan13 reg, the warranty will have expired.

I'm slowly making my way through the handbook. It's a BlueEfficiency model that defaults to Eco mode when it's started up (auto stop start etc), where would the sport mode be ?

It's a small button to the left of your centre console. E for economy and S for sport.

Anyway they're very economical on motorway drives, really very fast, great acceleration, fantastic build quality, seats a bit too firm for me. The auto box is very smooth and it's a very quiet car to drive even under heavy acceleration. I've no inclination to change brands.

Yup, It's there. I'll have a play with it tomorrow.
