and now Kipling gets the Rhodes treatment.

You make some good points - and there is definitely a sliding scale of racism as I alluded to when asked about my approach to it in the Army.
Rubbish! There is either racism or not. Just that some people pretend some of it is acceptable.
Does it just suit you to ignore what is inconvenient?

You are talking nonsense - but that’s not a departure from the norm.

Do you really think every joke is equally offensive? Do you really think there is no difference between a race based joke and serious discrimination based on race?

On that note though how do you define whats banter whats racist and what sounds racist but is intended as nothing of the sort - replace racist with offensive in a broader context

Used to work with a guy with very pale skin - so we called him Casper
If said chap was an all dark skinned team and that nick name adopted - is that an acceptable joke or an insult based on his skin colour. From where I stand it could be either and intent must be considered when reviewing such things . ( You can reverse this to an exceptionally dark skinned chap being nick named midnight etc)
Then of course nick names and banter take the form of distinguishing features - I was tall very thing and have a big nose thus the guys told all the Arabs my name was Schindler and I was Israeli* .

Jarrod is the Butt** of jokes regarding his preferences - at what point is it homophobia - humour or humour resulting from casual / latent homophobia who gets to decide - because we now have the situation that someone can take offense on the victims behalf and so can decide that you should have been offended.
Again context, relationship and indeed environment make a big difference.

*I didnt know this until the RSPs and Lebanon kicked off and I wondered why certain people were being cagey with me.

Sorry for the late reply.

I think we shouldn’t take banter too seriously. If people are joking then they are joking and as long as people aren’t too bothered then it’s fine - it harks back to my point about people deciding what is offensive. If everyone is having fun then fine - if someone is getting abused and then told to ‘lighten up it’s a faaaacking joke’ then that’s less ok.

There is a big difference on here between people making jokes and - as someone said to me a while back - ‘If you dont like it then **** off on a boat’

Sometimes it’s difficult - someone called me a ‘Gibson’ on a post this morning. Is that a joke or was the person too much of a coward to write what they really wanted to say?

Which is pretty much my take on it - however if you were to say to me " jocular insult based on physical characteristic " shift that and were over heard by some over zealous humourless HR drone then you are in deep do do because it matters not that im not offended - but I in their opinion should / could have been.

You are absolutely right - nothing worse than perceived offence on behalf of others.

A friend of mine tells a story about being approached at King’s College London by a group of young white students all dressed up in chains and things. They said to him that they wanted to apologise on behalf of all white British people for the ‘crimes’ of colonialism and slavery yadda yadda yadda. His response was ‘nothing to apologise to me about mate I’m from Hampstead.’

Diane isn’t the full ticket though is she.
She's a thickie, but has made quite a career out of playing the race card

It's strange that black Tory MPs don't play the race card, it seems to be a socialist thing

Guess some people just have principles, which ironically is a rarity for Tories lately

The whole Labour shtick is about victim hood and people being mistreated by ‘da man’

Ok Grandad - I’ll bear your thoughts in mind. I’m not from overseas by the way. I’m from Britain.

By the way who is Mr Blackman and why am I carrying his burden? Did he drop off the back of a tab? Couldn’t handle the weight?
You may be from Britain but you are certainly not British, especially in your thinking! You were just lucky to be born here, now relax and appreciate all the gifts that this country bestows; especially the good, which outweighs the bad! .

Trafalgar Square, many years back: "Do you have any idea what is going on in South Africa?"
"Probably, considering how I live there..."
Howls of "RACIST! APARTHEID CRIMINAL" etc
Yep, nothing like pre-judging, is there?

University was the golden ticket to life 30 years ago if you picked a half-way sane degree. These days it’s a ticket to vast debt and as the internet becomes ever more powerful and the students show themselves to be transparent, touchy idiots, it will become a disutility.

Apart from one or two subjects you need accreditation for (medicine, law, engineering, sciences) there will be nothing you can’t learn from the internet (no not arrse) ,

The University of Snowflake is draining to observe.

Apparently applications have dropped 5% this coming year for university.

Many young males have worked out already this is a waste of money. When the girls work it out (if feminists let them) the Universities are in big trouble.

University is no longer designed to challenge a students view of the world, but rather to indoctrinate an ideological viewpoint into the student. Learning, exploring and questioning what we know no longer forms a part of the educational process, instead the student is ‘guided’ which cuts out the necessity for independent thought.

Many University essays are designed in such a way that the student must reach ‘the desired’ conclusion in order to secure the pass mark. Highlighting an alternative viewpoint is highly discouraged if the student wishes to pass.

Just seems a bucket of luke warm water (or piss) would melt this countries young academics.

I weep that these dickhéads are our future
The good news is that they are actually a vociferous minority not taken very seriously by the student body at large, the problem is with the University leadership being shit.
