Can somebody explain why US trucks are so different to European trucks please?

When I was building the WW2 Canadian C8 truck I found that one of the requirements issued by the WD was that it had a flat front. This would enable more trucks to be parked in a set area (on ship).

If you consider how many ferries there are in Europe now and ferry companies charge by the meter you can see why they have shorter trucks.

Probably because they do longer journeys, the drivers cab area is far larger as they need to live in their for longer periods of time and need somewhere to store clothes/supplies etc. Maybe it's a health and safety/union issue - probably an American Truck driver will know. Also the engine/transmission will be larger - as they pull larger loads.
I think from the Rhine to eastern Turkey is a fairly long trip and not uncommon. Plus of course masses of HGV coming from Portugal and Spain to northern Europe or even Scandinavia. All that fruit and veg certainly don't walk.

Loving parents eh?

Huggy fluffy parenting with no boundaries and no consequences even if there were boundaries in place. Then they wonder why their delightfully entitled and over privileged spawn go off the rails.

Abuse is stress position for ten hours, beatings, starvation and savage bumming by petrol soaked monkeys, not having your phone confiscated and no name brand ketchup with meals. To be fair I can see how it would be stressful being lifted from your scratcher and finding yourself doing basic training, but looking at the past behaviour of the Hilton exhibit, one can almost understand the frustration that drives parents to things like that to clean up their progeny's lifestyles.

ETA: The sexual abuse thing is not acceptable at all, but the question there is what exactly do they consider as sexual abuse?

America, what a fu**ed up society.

Just watching FIREANDPOLICEVIDEOS series on the (eventual) arrest of Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan by the Española Police, with the help of Taos County Sheriffs SWAT team.

Nothing like a stand off between 2 armed LE agencies.

A badly driven vehicle will kill one just as dead as any firearm.

Especially if done intentionally.

'Several cyclists have been critically injured when a man in a pick-up truck ploughed into them during a community road race in the US state of Arizona.

'Six people were taken to a hospital in critical condition after the crash on Saturday in the mountain town of Show Low, a three-hour drive northeast of Phoenix, police said. Police said the pick-up truck struck the bicyclists at about 7:25am (14:25 GMT) during the annual 93km (58-mile) Bike the Bluff race before fleeing. Officers pursued the driver and tried to stop him before he was shot, authorities said.

'Tony Quinones, 55, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, told the New York Times that he had been riding for about six minutes with other cyclists ages 55 and over when a black pick-up truck that had been driving in the opposite direction crossed over three lanes and headed towards the cyclists. He assumed the driver was turning into a parking lot. Instead, the driver ploughed directly into the cyclists who had been ahead of Quinones, he said.'

My goddaughter, in the south of England, is a case in point.

Both parents had clear boundaries when growing up – career naval dad in the one case, Greek immigrant school cleaner in the other.

They went for the fluffy, no boundaries approach. The girl doesn’t study, wants to leave school without going to college (having no idea what she will do instead).
She goes out of an evening telling them she is meeting her mates – either comes back trashed on vodka and pills (hospitalised twice); or doesn’t come back at all, having spent the night with a most unsuitable youth.

Two years ago they unloaded on me when she was getting troublesome. I put them in touch with a friend who is an experienced psychologist, specialising in teen angst. It took him about 30 seconds to diagnose: she needs boundaries.

Guess what, it wasn’t what they wanted to hear. So they didn’t change their parenting. Now the whole situation is much worse.

I stay out of it.
