America - its all a bit odd...

The flooding is in Florida, the state in the southeast corner of the US.
The flooded area abuts the Gulf of Mexico, a warm body of water
Right now it is just after midnight and the temperature is 78F/26C and it is warmer during the day
The air is very humid.
Much of the area has no power and therefore no air conditioning
I suspect the locals might be more comfortable in shorts.

Yay NYC!

..before some jerk spoiled the party by getting shot. Twat!

The last weekend New York City went without any shootings was in 1993
The streak of no shootings over the weekend began last Thursday, following a shooting in Brooklyn and carried through until Monday, when a person was shot in the Bronx, according to the Daily News.

Mayor Bill de Blasio commended the NYPD for the lack of shootings while speaking at the department’s graduation ceremony Monday.

“A city of 8.6 million people, not a single shooting for three days,” he said. He called it an “extraordinary” achievement and credited the NYPD for the streak."

@Ruckerwocman ..looks like you guys got a bit of thrashing...well maybe not quite that bad.. from the Boilermakers..

You're a little late to the party. We've already heard the news - it came over the jungle telegraph with the news about Mafeking. ;-) That's Ohio State's fault; they don't have any run game. Unless Coach Urban Meyer can get it fixed in the bye week, the remainder of the regular season schedule will be tough indeed.

The stunning loss by OSU at West Lafayette to a ho-hum Purdue team ( 4 W 3 L) was solely because they couldn’t get any run game going against them [Purdue] and relied too much on the forward pass. This fault was spotted as early as the OSU vs. Minnesota game, if not before. One ESPN pundit said that David Blough (Purdue's Quarterback) is the next Drew Brees, but I think that is being overgenerous, He saw and exploited the Buckeyes’ faults and made himself look like a hero. Let’s see if he is still a hero or a zero when Purdue faces the following Murderer's Row in the remainder of their regular season:

Michigan State
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Indiana

Purdue will be lucky if they can get one more win before the season ends; probably against Indiana. I don't see the other 4 being push-overs by any means.

This one is a bit amusing in its own way, as in you could see this coming.
Museum admits parts of its Dead Sea Scrolls are fake | CBC News

The new Museum of the Bible opened in Washington last year, and among its attendees was US vice president Pence. The centrepiece of it was a collection of 16 fragments of Dead Sea Scrolls.
When Washington's $500 million Museum of the Bible held its grand opening in November 2017, attended by Vice-President Mike Pence, there were questions even then about the authenticity of its centrepiece collection of Dead Sea Scrolls.
The museum has been forced to admit that more than a quarter of their "Dead Sea Scrolls" were fakes.
Now the museum has been forced to admit a painful truth: Technical analysis by a team of German scholars has revealed that at least five of the museum's 16 scroll fragments are apparent forgeries.
These are a different set of scrolls than the famous ones under the control of the Israeli Antiquities Authority. These are ones which mysteriously appeared on the antiquities market from unknown sources around 2002. Scholars were skeptical about them and said they were likely forgeries intended to take in American evangelical Christians, who are obsessed with that sort of thing. It turns out the scholars were right and American Christian organizations paid millions to acquire them.
The scrolls are a collection of ancient Jewish religious texts first discovered in the mid-1940s in caves on the western shore of the Dead Sea in what is now Israel. The massive cache of Hebrew documents is believed to date back to the days of Jesus. With more than 9,000 documents and 50,000 fragments, the entire collection took decades to fully excavate.

Most of the scrolls and fragments are tightly controlled by the Israeli Antiquities Authority. But around 2002, a wave of new fragments began mysteriously appearing on the market, despite skepticism from Biblical scholars.

These fragments, they warned, were specifically designed to target American evangelical Christians, who prize the scrolls. That appears to be exactly what happened; a Baptist seminary in Texas and an evangelical college in California reportedly paid millions to purchase alleged pieces of the scrolls.
Among the buyers was a family of American billionaires who also are the main financial backers of the new museum. They spent $500 million on the new museum.
Also eagerly buying up fragments was the Green family, evangelical Oklahoma billionaires who run the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores and who famously sued the Obama administration on religious grounds, saying they didn't want to pay to provide their employees access to the morning-after pill or intrauterine devices.

The Greens are the primary backers of the Museum of the Bible and went on an archaeological acquisition spree in the years leading up to the museum's opening.
I will add that while the German scholars have determined that more than a quarter of these "Dead Sea Scrolls" are fakes, I wouldn't take that as meaning that the rest of them are genuine. The Germans were only given 5 to test, and found that all 5 were fakes. The rest could also be fakes as well and it would surprise me of they were not.

The interesting part in all this is that forgers knew their market and that the obsession that American religious fundamentalists had with the genuine Dead Sea Scrolls in Israel made them suckers when offered fakes.

The tinfoil hat brigade are out in force this week. FFS!

Former Minnesota congresswoman and current “pastor to the United Nations” Michele Bachmann appeared on the American Pastors Network’s “Stand In The Gap” radio program yesterday, where she asserted that George Soros had financed and organized the caravan of Central American migrants that is heading toward the United States, which she claimed it made up almost entirely of “gang-aged males” who are part of MS-13. “This is completely intentional,” Bachmann said. “This is not an accident. This is being done—some reports are George Soros has spent upwards of $20 billion to make this happen … This is an invasion. This isn’t about compassion, this is an invasion of people, it is an attack on the United States border.”

To be perfectly honest this caravan is a gift to the GOP this close to the election. It fires up the voters and is an issue that will help turnout on the conservative side!

Tinfoil hats - or not - George Soros COULD well be behind it . . . although corroborative evidence would be helpful . . .

I'd laugh at this, but the level of received ignorance is frightening.

If that cost him upwards of $20bn, then his savvy as a wise investor has gone down in my eyes.

Article in this weekend's Times by an actress filming "The little drummer boy". She was complaining about the endless retakes so her tits weren't visible, so we don't upset the Americans [it's a co-production]. All the violence will be graphically depicted, that's fine just no nipples please or the world will collapse and society as we know it will fall.

Americans take student sport a lot more seriously than we do. In the UK it's one afternoon a year for an hour or so max, maybe, for a sport that is barely watched for the rest of the year; and if the BBC lost interest so would everyone else. Hands up the UK members who could even find the location of their local universities soccer pitch, never mind tell me when the next game is.

That's what I never understood about Clearwater beach, no topless bathing for women but you could buy hard core porn a couple of blocks from the beach.
