Amended Backstop

Absolutely agree.
The port authority At Cherbourg have assured us that in a worst case scenario re EMCT we will trans ship product from our French clients to our trailers en route from jersey in the Freeport area. Ergo we don’t customs wise enter France.
Where there’s a will there’s a William!.
I see that got a dumb from slackbag, despite it being fact. thank god it doesn’t actually work in Buisness,

Reading between the lines Lowestoft is getting an upgrade for a Freight loop, more sidings. Timing is of course notable, what with wind technology, regularshort sea trade and a purpose built custom house still in existence, plus dry dock facilities. Yup moving along nicely. There aren’t many movements that escape your’s truly s notice.

Corbyns had a constructive meeting and there's this from a eurosceptic QC to get everyone's hopes up for a day or so.

Geoffrey Cox's plan A is 'codicil' giving UK unilateral right to exit the backstop with 1 yr notice h/t @jessicaelgot

Some cabinet ministers think it's promising.

Another eg of the chasm in expectations b/w Westminister and Brussels.

There may be no backstop of any description if it isn't sorted soon

It’s alright there are people out there who think that no brexit means we aren’t leaving Europe.

Things will just revert to normal.

We’re not, we’re leaving the E.U. Exactly what Corbyn thinks he’s doing as unelected negotiator other than schnoozing with his socialist buddies. Just so long as the U.K. looses out, his chief aim as ever, ...

Pillock hasn’t realised that actually the very people he pretends to care about will lose out if the City is forced into the EUro is another matter.

I don't understand why the UK is expected to do the EUs border protection for them. How the UK looks after its side of the border with the Republic of Ireland is not dependent upon paying to put in a border control they want. I'd rather the EU spent their money on whatever border control inside the EU since the UK is supposed to be leaving. In my view it is like the EU expecting the UK to provide all the military defence rather than provide their own.

No one is asking it to

But if the U.K. wants an independent trade policy (eg own trade deals, set own tariffs etc etc) then its needs to have its own customs controls in place

Why? If the UK wishes it can allow goods in without checks. All the grief is coming from the EU. If the EU wants checks then the EU sets them up.

I reckon if the truth was known the U.K. at the moment does very few revenue type checks on freight from the Republic. Of course checks are carried out for terrorism and drugs.

The level of border controls can be zero up to a European-style Berlin wall. The UK has repeatedly said no hard border. Varadkar and Juncker both told the Dail that neither Ireland nor the EU would impose a hard border.

Yet it seems that Leo has been led down the garden path.

Which is precisely the position with over-flight protection for Ireland, as provided by the RAF for free.
Because it's in our interests. The only threats would be from Russian a/c on a Cuba run taking a sharp left. Same with any hijacked airliners, in our interest to get them early.

Which makes me wonder why the relevant treaty deals solely with threats over the Irish Republic, and why the Irish complain about the RAF meeting its treaty obligations.

The UK Defence Journal suggests it's down to "hurt Irish pride".

Irish politician angry that RAF 'had not informed Ireland' that Typhoons intercepted Russian bombers off coast
ASACS is a UK concern full stop, any treaty to assist Ireland needs the diplomatic bits is all. One grievance manufacturing Fianna Fáil pollie isn't Ireland.

Hurrah the border problems been sorted or something. The latest from Barclay in DeXeu.
22 days piece of piss, get IDS to sort it out.

We have agreed with the EU to consider a joint work stream to develop alternative arrangements. The Government will establish three advisory groups to support the UK’s input into this strand of the negotiation: parliament.uk/business/

Everyone agrees that they don’t want a hard border

The means of preventing one is the backstop

Westminster is forcing one by not agreeing to the backstop

That’s diplomacy but May through stupidity/design has left it too late to come up with an alternative

Everyone knew the backstop (or similar) was the only means of preventing a hard border and Ireland was always aware of that.

Afaik it isn’t in a Treaty.

They should have been doing that for the last 15 months when the backstop was agreed when they realised it wasn’t popular in order to prevent it being required

Utter pish and drivel, the only party in this being realistic is the UK govt, we know as do the Irish however we also acknowledge that ignoring the border will and has gone on since it was put in. We can manage goods entering GB through electronic customs management. Stuff entering NI legally the same. Illegal stuff will have to take its chances. Simply put every vehicle importing has an electronic manifest. Simply pull over wagons which havent submitted them somewhere before their final destination. NI, GB and RoI all understand this. It seems you dont understand how customs and excise work in the 21st Century.
Technically we have a hard border with France, the fact that I am rarely stopped is based upon C&E intelligence. I have been stopped a few times, they were profiling vehicle size and owners age for booze and fag smuggling
