Brotherton Lad, you are quite right. I think Victor was a Squadron 2ic at Chepstow. He certainly never forgot the CO's refusal to give him leave to attend the dedication service.

IIRC, the big hoose was in the hands of his cousin, the long-term PM of NI Sir Basil Brooke (later Lord Brookeborough) who - notoriously - when campaigning said he "wouldn't have a Catholic about the place".
The remark was as untrue as it was stupid, as quite a lot of the estate workers were adherents of Rome.

My local big hoose changed hands during the Battle of the Somme. Both the males of the incumbent family were killed.
