Airport X-rays

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Can anyone tell me if airport X-ray machines can damage i.e. wipe or partially wipe magnetic tapes, e.g. audio or video cassettes

  2. In short, yes. Audio cassettes and VHS are more prone to magnetic by product than the miniHD type video. You could always invoke Google.

  3. ??? Surely not? Photographic films, yes, but x-rays shouldn't affect magnetic media; possibly if there's a FOGB electric motor under the belt. They x-ray laptops I believe (????never travelled with one) without wiping the magnetic hard discs, so why would magnetic tapes be affected?

  4. There's no magnetism involved in X-ray so I doubt it

  5. Thanks all! Thinking about going see the daughter in Canada over christmas and taking all her music cassettes, (de-cluttering the house)

  6. They'll be fine, have you told your daughter or are you just going to dump them on her . Parents are considered the universal storage area.
