AID's & HIV

Whilst I was in Hospital, I overheard 3 Nurses talking about their Hospitals AIDS/HIV budget and they were saying that 60% of the Hospitals Budget for AIDS was spent on it's own Staff. Is this possible ? (I may of misheard as I was coming round after being in Surgery)

Hopefully this thread won't go to the hole, as it's a serious question on my part.

You were coming round after surgery and your immediated concern is whether the hospital has enough budget for HIV?

...either you still have a head injury, or a 5 stone anemic gay lover.....

Could be the surgeons sticking themselves with needles whilst operating etc and needing HIV tests.

I don't know.

But you just made me think twice about shagging nurses......

Where was the hospital? Ethiopia?? Why not make a freedom of information request to the hospital?

Shag the ones that cough!

Please see the 1930s for background reference to that joke. Or Full Metal Jacket.

Probably just something said by people who don't like darkies from the ex colonies coming to work in the NHS - wouldn't be surprised if they're all tested in their home countries before signing on though - it's pretty normal to be tested at regular intervals no matter what you do - in fact if you're going to get insurance it's required for example and in many jobs again you are required to be tested - something that would be a definite no-no over here.

That convo in full:

Nurse 1) "Jesus ******* Christ. My HIVES are giving me gyp"

Nurse 2) "Moan moan moan moan. Button it. Listen, I've got to get some new SHADES at lunch time. Fancy coming with me? Heyup. Dickless Dan is coming round. Look sharp, he's drooling again"

I'd be honestly surprised if the people most at risk from accidental infection in a hospital weren't the clinical staff. 60% if anything sounds a bit light to me.

Serious head on....are you sure that what they meant wasn't '60% of the AIDS/HIV budget is spent on staffING' as in Doctors, specialist nurses, liason workers, outreach workers...blah blah??

Unlikely. IIRC, the infection rate in the UK is between 0.1% and 0.2%.

Even among asylum seekers, many of whom come to the UK seeking treatment because they are HIV +ve, I believe only 20% are infected. Unless the hospital's blowing its budget on diversity courses for the staff it's likely that the alcohol poisoning, err I mean anaesthetic, had gone to your head.

Thats a possible explanation.

I wasn't worried that I may get infected.

All I wanted to know was if what I heard was right, that it is possible that in some Hospitals a large percentage of it's AIDS budget was spent on meds/treatment for it's own staff. I don't think that it means that the staff have become infected at the Hospital but were employed and already had AIDs

Any reported needlestick injury or cut inflicted with, for instance, a contaminated scalpel will trigger a screening and preventative treatment protocol. This will involve courses of drugs designed to lessen the risk of disease. This process costs, at minimum, hundreds of pounds per clinician at risk. In your average district hospital it is perfectly feasible for 60% of the AIDS/HIV 'budget' to be spent in this way. (Its not really a seperate budget.)
