Afghan History Repeats Itself - "Des" MacNaghten

Des Browne on Afghanistan, 19 July 2006, in Parliament:
“Neither the Taliban, nor the range of illegally armed groups, currently pose a threat to the long-term stability of Afghanistan.”
from Hansard http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200506/cmhansrd/cm060719/debindx/60719-x.htm

Sir William MacNaghten (Head of the mission to Kabul) on Afghanistan, August 1841, in a letter :
All quiet from Dan to Beersheba
Both Des Browne and Sir William MacNaghten were dedicated careerists who would not let the truth get in the way of their advancement. The difference is that, MacNaghten was murdered by a mob on his way to a Kabul gaol as the result of his negligence. Des Browne is sadly more likely to expire choking on a pie in the Commons tea room.
