Advice please - SOS gifts for squaddies in AFG

Discussion in 'Charities and Welfare' started by Stonker, Aug 12, 2009.

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. At my place of work in Worcester, there's a big bin collecting morale boosters for troops in AFG.

"Aha!" I thought - equal opps head on: "I'll buy a grot mag for the guys (and gay gals?) and a copy of Cosmo or some such for the remainder of the population".

Then I noticed the small print that says anything faintly porn-like will be filtered out and destroyed en route (presumably by being thumbed into oblivion by some RAF Snowdropn JNCO . . . )

    Point is -

    a. I want to know what gifts would likely be best appreciated out there (any kind of treat), and

    b. Which magazines are currently the favoured guys/gals reading/ogling material ?.

Then I can badger my family, colleagues and friends the more effectively.

    Over to you.

  2. Have a look at this SOS page, its got a couple of posters listing suitable items. I`ve been told recently that boot laces are particularly needed (150-160cm).

  3. Haribo. Lots and lots of haribo.

  4. Feck me - I thought it was just helis, armour, more troops and DfID support they were short of out there . . . :x

  5. It does seem sad doesn`t it, the local SOS lady said she`s been asked for them as some of the lads are having to use bits of wire when their laces break and they can`t get replacements for them from stores.

  6. Bump

So far all the suggestions i've had are haribo and laces

The key question, however, is "Which - if any - magazines would be most appreciated?"

I can't believe there is a shortage of green string / paracord.

  8. can someone point me in the direction of somewhere to get the names and address of some guys and girls to send some parcles to.
I have heard that you cant just address them to A Soldier anymore and I would like to start sending out some parcles, I have no connections to any of the armed forces so dont really know where to start looking.
Im mainly looking to send Jerky, sweets and it seems boot laces but any suggesting would be good.
And without taking the piss to much can you tell me, would there be a call for vegetarian snacks, I have no idea but plenty to send if they would be welcomed.

  9. yup, meet me at the mosque in Luton on friday...i can pass you a few names and adresses!!

edited to add....you're unlikely to get a sensible response for a question (however well meaning) like that here!!

  10. I have noticed since I joined a few weeks ago but no harm trying, just thought I would ask, might need to start trying to bribe people by offering free jerky but will hold off on that for a while and see if I can find someone serving to post it to

  11. Start here - you and I seem to be in the same boat
