Admiralty Arch sold for £60m - government ought to be able to waste that in a week

There are probably a substantial number of grace and favour appartments in government / crown estate / regal employ, that could do with the occupants being kicked into touch and spending real money on accommodation and said grace and favour apartments rented out at the extortionate rate they deserve.

Many site members wanted a Tory govt, this is what Tories do.
After 13 years of a "sell off everythin" Labour Govt, it made a change. At least, the Tories haven't sold our Sovereignty off, not that there was anything left to sell! Now, go and earn some pennies to shore up your pension and pay for proper broadband ;-)

True. But didn't prescott want to turn it into a homeless shelter or lesbian peace creche?

At least the tories have got a bit of money out of it.

Wonder how much DAVE wants for his grannie?

Wasn't there a bit of a furor when Blair got in because one of his cabinet was redecorating her apartment there with hugely expensive wallpaper?

Rubbish, Labour bought loads of things, we just couldn't afford them but will be doing so for another 25 years.

I think this is great news.

Who is using it at the moment and what is it used for? Can that work be done elsewhere?

I think it is time the Sandhurst was sold off and training moved to Brecon or Catterick.

Naturally, the money raised from selling or leasing these buildings will be ploughed into the defence estates elsewhere.....?

If Govt hasn't got a use for it, what else to do?

Fact or fiction?

A bloke who was Household Cav back in the 60's told me that when they were at Horseguards, when not actually on sentry duty they could get out of one of the upper windows, and go along a ledge to get access to the Admiralty to chat up the WREN's on radio watch.

Can't see what all the fuss is about, they've got to fund their expenses some way haven't they? Should imagine this'll keep MP's in beer, fags and pies for a couple of years......

In the recent past, the 'grace and favour' flats within were used by the homeless over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
Lots of PR was promoted around London extolling the munificience of our MP's surrendering their flats to the street people. Little was mentioned of the civil service con to use public funds to upgrade the accomodation following the removal of the homeless back onto the streets in the January.
Derry Irvine, remember him? costing the tax payer thousands of pounds on exotic wall paper alone. Cunts the lot of them.

Questions arise for the whole area - the FCO is drastically reducing the numbers of its staff and intends to have fully vacated Old Admiralty Building next door by next year. Wonder if that will be leased as well.
