A weekend spent 90 years in the past... some pics for you

Well... the wife and I spent a delightfull weekend in a little town called Rhinebeck which is located in upstate New York. One of the reasons for the getaway was to finally see the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/ and to watch aircraft I have only seen in museums take to the air.

The star of the show, at least according to the cheezy plot!

Plot? Yes... they had a whole skit set in the Great War of a nasty German ace named "The Black Baron" kidnapping the bride of our heroic Allied ace... silly but it provided the impetus for some interesting flying routines and other things.

End act was an amusing dogfight between the SPAD and three opponents... a Fokker DR.1, Fokker D-VII, and an Albatros D-Va. Hero won of course but the Baron lived to land and shake his fist in revenge.

This Tigermoth and a Great Lakes competed in a unique event. The pilot dropped a roll of toilet paper at altitude and attempted to cut it as many times as possible before the stream was too low for safety. Seven cuts were made by the victor to the loser's six. Some darned good flying to watch to say the least.

Hmm... have a short vid of the SPAD gaining the advantage over one of his opponents but it's too large a file to post. Have several other pics and will post them tomorrow after work...
