A visit to an Israeli boneyard

not forgetting the Jordanians also attacked them, were repulsed and retreated from the entire West Bank.
I left out the other protagonist's. Their heart wasn't really in it I think.(Jordanians) They knew the pals. The Lebanese and Iraqis were there too. Amazing feat of arms on Israel's part. I think due in part to the fact that a lot of the fighters were children of, and possibly some survivors of the camps. Hopefully the great grandchildren will show the same metal when the time comes.

It's Holocaust remembrance day here tomorrow and the radio is playing interviews with survivors, focussing this year on accounts by people who were children at the time. You only need to hear a bit of that to be reminded of/ understand what was driving the Israelis of that generation. Many of the reservist fighters in 1973 were also children-of. I've been listening to fascinating accounts by them recently (unfortunately they're all in Hebrew with no subtitles), amazing and mundane stories, heroism and cowardice, leadership etc.....
Also, as an infantryman, very interesting to hear about the way the tankies see their work.

I've visited Jerusalem three times, always made a point of visiting Yad Vashem each time.

For the Izzies losing is not one of the options on offer, indeed I believe it is one the principles of the IDF never to lose a single war.

Not bad Drllers, not bad.... however, what precedes independence day is memorial day for the fallen of the defence and security forces.

So true, on my visit there in the mid '80's when I asked my guide why the Israeli's were hard on the Palestinians, he explained they were surrounded on all sides by peoples whose stated aim was to eliminate/exterminate the whole of Israel.
He said "you Christians say to 'turn the other cheek' if struck. If we Israeli's did that, they would rip our heads off"!!

In this neighbourhood you have to be strong. When you're strong you have a basis for developing relations further. Things have developed a lot in the time I've lived here. Peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan and even negotiaions with Lebanon regarding offshore gas fields. All these countries once rejected Israel's right to exist at all.

some pictures from the Independence day flypast on Thursday - Some are by friends - they mostly came out better than my own pics so I'm posting them (Unfortunately the visibility that day was very poor)
