A triumph for the caring sharing society

After 28 hours after skilful but drawn out negotiating tactics during which swathes of Birmingham were at a standstill Police manged to save a would be jumper from himself.

"The stand-off sparked a second day of chaos on the roads yesterday with a string of closures around the city centre on the busiest routes into and out of the city.

Tailbacks during yesterday’s rush hour were so big that they stretched through the tunnels, onto the A38 and even affected traffic on the northbound carriageway of the M6."

And all for a Latvian Big Issue seller trying to get a passport (and presumably a free ride) back to his homeland.

So how does the nationality or profession of the person in question have a bearing on whether they should be talked down or just helped off the ledge.

If you fell on hard times and found yourself in a similar position (obviously nationality wouldn't change) would you expect the same treatment as say, a soldier recently returned from Afghanistan who found his wife shacked up with someone new and decided to end it all?

Was it a Latvian soldier in your example?
