Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

Whilst researching an essay I've found lots of references to 1st 2nd and 3rd generation man portable air defence systems. This is all well and good but I haven't got a clue what the differences between the generations are and Google is not being its usual helpful self. Any help would be appreciated.

This is also posted in the gunners forum, so appologies for the double post.

    Cheers,

Not an expert, but I belevie that:

1st Gen - operator steers to target (Blowpipe, etc)

2nd Gen - keep tracker on target - SACLOS

3rd Gen - point, ID, fire & forget

Whether IFF is involved in these gen definitions I am not sure, but don't think so.
