A good time to take military action in the South China Sea

America wouldn't be in the position it is if they banned US companies from setting up in China consider the regime is ungrateful to the American Pilots that flew in aid of that nation when they were invaded by the Japs

Whilst we see Obama create the American Jobs act LOL whilst they still persist with the embargo with Cuba but will do business with the chinese

We should let the Yanks go it alone, they'll end up completely broke begging for our help and and we can start empire building again :)

All very well but imagine how dreadful the people one would have to deal with rebuilding the Empire in North America - Africa would be a lot more fun and profitable.

"Didn't Vietnam dish out a kicking to china a while ago? Vietnamese are tough little bastards."

Actually if you look back there are very few people who haven't been given a good shoeing by the Viets - invade Vietnam - get the crap kicked out of you till you give up and go away. Perhaps we should look at re-equipping the Armed forces with black pajama's, sandals made of car tyres, bicycles and AK 47's?

This would be the same regime that set up a national memorial to the Flying Tigers and publicly acknowledged in its own state media the debt China owes them?

They've even put up a memorial to the Japanese civilian colonists who died in Manchuria after the surrender before public anger made them pull it down. The public preferred to remember Hiroshi Yamasaki because, unlike Japanese society at large, he ackowledged the responsibility he bore for atrocities.

I would say if the Chinese want to put a bit of stick about over the Spratley Islands I would have no problem with that. They could show Vietnam who's the boss and I wouldn't bat an eye because I know the Vietnamese can take care of themselves. 1979 was only the latest instance of when the NVA sent the People's Army packing - the fighting between the Vietnamese and the Chinese goes a long way back.

I would be troubled though if the Chinese menaced the Philippines. Those were our wogs and we have had strong ties of friendship since independence. In fact, a close chum of mine married a Filipina that he met when he was in the Navy. You bet we'd sit up and take notice then if the Chinese were rattling swords against the Philippines. Maybe we'd get Subic Bay back again.

In view of the level of cuts taking place already, I thought that was Defence Council policy as of next year ...

P.S. I would prefer AK-47 to the current issued weapon, though.

From memory, the record is that since the Viets broke away from the Southern Han, there have been 16 wars between Vietnamese ancestor nations and Chinese ones. The score is about 14-2 to Vietnam.

Even Ghengis stopped short at the Hue. That ought to tell you something.

"You fool! You've fallen victim to one of the Classic Blunders, the most famous of which is, 'Never fight a land war in South-East Asia!' But only slightly less well known is, 'Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line!' Ha ha ha ha(drops dead)"

Didn't tom clancy write the plot of this war about 15 years ago were a US sub destroyed the PLAN in one go,

Sino-Vietnamese War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bar that sub getting the jump on the yanks in peace time i don't think would do well in a war as google says the majority of their fleet is 70's and 80's era russian ships with a smattering of more modern western looking desighns. while the japs have a slightly less ships but more modern based of the yank burkes apparently they have 47 destroyers and frigates including a couple which are pretty much helicopter carriers plus 18 subs its a shame the RN isn't that powerfull today. so i don't think a full blown war between china and japan would have good odds for the PLAN if everyones playing hardball espechially with the japs modern kit

plus the south china sea is not a good place to put their carrier as everybody is shopping at ivans supersonicantishipmissilesrus.com
considering the Russians spent forty years figuring the best way to make the Nimitz go glug glug and what they came up is get a couple of tons of HE and fly it really really fast at the carrier

Remind me please someone, who owns all the US debt? That's the 7th fleet staying put then.

Paradoxically, it has the opposite effect - as the Krauts are discovering with Greece.

Well the Americans have equipped the new USS Gerald Ford with the Evolved Sea Sparrow missile (ESSM), Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) and a mixture of active and passive ECM and seem to believe that they have a realistic counter to threats like the P-270 Moskit. Who knows? There's only realistic way to find out...

yes the Americans can counter most missile strikes but plan haven't got the escorts to protect their new carrier

And those are the last chance self defence option IF, both the BARCAP and CAP get busted through, the distant missile screen provided by the accompanying CG gets busted through, the mid and near missile screen provided by the DDG's gets busted through and assuming any leakers also get past the inner layer ships that will resort to acting as missile magnets and taking a last pop at the missile with their CIWS, medium calibre guns and ESSM.
