  1. Around 60 people have died and 200 been injured in a New Year's Eve stampede at a stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

It happened after crowds gathered to watch a fireworks display.

A rescue official said: "There are around 60 dead and about 200 injured, this is a provisional estimate."

He said the incident happened near Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.

One local woman, Assetou Toure, said her children had been at the event and she did not know if they had survived.

"My two children came here yesterday. I told them not to come but they didn't listen," she said.

"They came when I was sleeping. What will I do?"

A Reuters correspondent said there were blood stains and abandoned shoes outside the stadium on Tuesday morning and that rescue workers and government officials were still on the scene.

  8. The laugh compliment returned! Thanks for that.

  9. It was when those trying to leave met a huge wave of people arriving. Didn't they learn from Ibrox ?

  10. Keith Vaz is doing an interview on Sky now apparently.

  11. A pity it was only 60 killed.600 would be better,6,000 better still.

  12. Ibrox was caused by badly designed steep stairs with too many people on them basicly leading to a tragic dominoe effect. The crowd turning round to get back in scenario is a not so modern myth.

  13. I thought Ibrox was caused when someone dropped a penny?

  14. i was very young but i dont recall Glaswgians blaming anyone else for it
