Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I am trying to find out specific tank names (and if possible which Sqn they belonged to) of 4RTR in the Western desert during WWII.

I am specifically interested in the period when 4RTR was part of 32nd Tank Brigade and fought in Matilda tanks.

    Can anyone help?

  2. Try" World War 2 Talk" web site lots of info on there

  3. "British Tank Markings and Names". Its a bit large to be added as an attachment.
Or download here: http://freebooksource.info/?p=70214 not that I would ever recommend such a thing, of course.

  4. I can supply all names from 1978 which are listed in the Regiment's Compendium of Facts (4th ed.) some are listed as having been used back then but there was a big shake up in vehicle names after WW2.

Jan - May 1941 B Sqn was in Erittrea, Abyssinia as part of % Indian Div.
Feb 1941 the rest of 4RTR arrived in Egypt equipped with matildas and the regiment was suspended 20 June 1942 when Tobruk ewas overrun.
1 March 1945. 4RTR resurrected from 144 RAC equipped with Buffaloes.

  5. It is the time when 4RTR were equiped with Matilda's that I am interested in.
