440 Britons feared dead in quake

Around 440 Britons are either dead or missing in the Asian tsunami disaster, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has said.
Mr Straw told a news conference in Thailand 49 Britons had been confirmed dead and 391 remained unaccounted for.

He said the confirmed dead included 36 Britons in Thailand, 10 in Sri Lanka and three in the Maldives.
As terrible as these figures are, how on earth has it taken this long to get a 'confirmed' figure for the missing. It was only early this week that they came up with the figure of 159, now it's much higher, what will it be next week?
As I mentioned yesterday on another thread, I wonder if the figures were quietly supressed for a while in order not to reflect too badly upon the Dear Leader's failure to stir himself from his sun-lounger.
