4 Para confusion

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi,
Could anyone please shed some light on this? The 4 Para website, and some other TA websites, list max. age as being 32 to join and yet the MOD (and the British Army website) say 43 for TA, regardless of capbadge. Is 4 Para outside the TA, or is it classed as a form of UKSF, or is it setting its own agenda (so to speak) to keep the not so young out?
    Thanks to all that reply.
  2. Phone the local detachment sure they can give you currant age limit
  3. If a person is approching 43, with no previous military service, I think they would find it VERY hard to join the TA, except as a doctor or Padre (army vicar) and in partcular 4 PARA. The various websites have phone numbers, I suggest you use them and speak to the horse's mouth as to what is displayed on their sites referance age (as opposed to here, which would make us the horse's ARRSE!).

  4. I'm sure I've heard about a few recruits close to the maximum age recently (not Paras I must admit though).

    How old are you casino?
  5. I was 42 when i signed up (last year) but i did have a years previous TA service back in the early 90's oh and i'm an architect which apparently interested them.

The website is a little out of date in that 4 Para follows the MOD age rules, but also very realistic. Applicants up to 43 can try to join 4 Para, but P Coy does not have timings which increase by age!

There are numerous examples of people who have passed P Coy later in life, but the likelyhood of going from no military experience to P Coy pass at age 43 is slim.
  7. Thanks for the info so far. I've just turned 34. Was thinking of maybe joining a local TA infantry regiment and then transferring (if possible) to 4 Para, so to help with any age problems i might face.

Btw, Rockhopperst4, which regiment did you sign up to last year?

Why? You will just be even older when you get there. If you want to go for 4 Para, then go for it.
  9. F*ck that- one of the lads on my cadre turned 32 when we were on a weekend ex in Catterick, and he passed P-Coy. With one notable, sandy-coloured-beret exception (that I know of) 'transfer' does not get you a 'collect Maroon Machine and pass straight to Brize Norton' card. Get stuck in to 4 Para now - all you'll do by going to another unit first is find out the massive differences and get a culture shock when the shouty men with red berets make you do things properly. You really, really won't regret it.
  10. 4 para had no problem with my age and I was 37

  11. you where doing so well until

    eheu fugaces.
  12. Watch 'The 55 year old commando' on You Tube. 34 is a bloody puppy!
