My client was established in 2002 as a high-technology research and development company, developing low-cost, flexible search and surveillance unmanned aerial vehicles (UVA) for military, homeland security, policing, disaster relief and environmental monitoring. The UAV’s would be rugged, immediately deployable and could be launched vertically from a ground, ship or even a moving vehicle.

They are now looking for a Flight Control Systems engineer to assist them in their primary goad of the development of 3VTOL UAV technology Demonstrators for the UK MoD within a 12 month project timeframe.

The key tasks within this role are to further expand the current flight control systems
development work that has been undertaken by the University of Southampton, using Mathworks Matlab & Simulink or VisSim and then through embedded code generation, create a stand-alone application on a single board computer (SBC). The most likely SBC will either be a Gumstix or Kontron platform running Linux, but further evaluation and test will be required, prior to the final decision being taken. The visualization platform for this simulation environment is Microsoft’s ESP. Additional aircraft dynamics studies may also be required, using a state-of-the-art aircraft dynamics generation engine. A full telemetry ‘black-box’ data recorder will also need to be implemented. The flight control systems software must be 100% robust and reliable and a high standard of software development and testing is essential to be successful in this role. Also crucial to the success of this work will be the development of a highly robust flight control systems architecture.

All team members will be required to produce consistent, high quality documentation, develop and adhere to rigorous test procedures, working to company and MoD standards and will be also become important members of the flight trials team at the back end of this exciting development programme.
