UK soldier dies from wounds after Helmand shooting

A British soldier has died from his wounds after being shot while on patrol in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has announced.

The soldier from 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment died from his wounds on Sunday, the MoD said.

He had been taking part in an operation against insurgent elements in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province.

The number of UK service personnel killed in operations in the country since 2001 stands at 345.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lt Col David Eastman, said: "He has made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the people of Nad-e Ali from insurgent intimidation and defending his country from the threat of terrorism.

"No more could be asked of any soldier. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

RIP

in 5 to 10 years time, when we pull out, and Afghanistan returns back to the state it was in pre 2001, in just a matter of months. Maybe then, some people will realise that this brave soul and many others died for what? Nothing? It saddens me so much that we can't stop the Government from wasting all these lives

Your sentiments may well be correct, but this is a RIP thread, which may well be read by bereaved family, friends and colleagues, the last thing they need to read right now is that it was another precious life lost in vain
