3 line whip / scale A parade

#1
just been having a discussion after a Mess Meeting and was wondering - can an RSM call a so called 3 line whip/scale A parade for a function?????. nowhere in QR's etc states that he can but as allways we do as we are told. But if you don't want to go to a function can he "order" you to spend money by attending a function you don't wish to attend or do you grab your balls and stand firm, after all if he gives you an order therefore making it a "Duty" then you shouldn't be billed to attend.
Your thoughts please.

What sorty of function is it? If it is dining someone out after 22 years I can understand there being a 3 line whip, unless you hate the Geezer, but too often we appear to be dining out Officers who are station Comd's etc. In that case I would tell the RSM to poke it up his arrse. Do Garrison or Stn RSMs get dined out by the Rupert's? Do they feck.

Seem to have gone off on a tangent, but in answer to the question, it is entirely up to you! You cannot be ordered to.

Nope, can end up Orderly Officer/Sgt for the night though.

2 possible get out clauses:

a. Ask if you can invite your same sex partner to the social. Also ask if there will be a dance floor so you can get down and dirty.

b. Tell RSM you are a recovering alcoholic and you are concerned the 'drink culture' may make you fall off the wagon.

In all seriousness, I don't think you can be forced to attend a function anymore. Should be able to find some guidance from PS(whatsit?).

Dear God, what is the Army coming to.....would you really tell the RSM to poke it - I'd like to be there for that, unless standards have dropped he should know exactly what to do with that attitude, ah but hang-on a sec, you must be AGC, or even worse in the RAF.

Not many in the Mess can, but I am in a position where I CAN! :D And no, I am not AGC.

So you're a fellow WO1 then. Looks like you have been promoted way above your natural level if that's the type of attitude you have.

If you're in a position where you can, even you should be able to see that you shouldn't!! (REME then).

The RSM shouldn't need to order you.

Typical example of declining Mess standards. Harrumph.

Whats the mess coming to, standards and all that  If you are a WO1 then you need to go kick yourself then revert to Pte soldier. The mess is an aspiration for all to succeed to not moan about

You don't have to attend any function the Army holds if it costs you money. As for telling the RSM to poke it, I wouldn't advise that but if he starts being a dik about you refusing to attend, thats when you can express your opinions more freely. He is only a human afterall.

OK...take a bit of flak for off the cuff comment about telling the RSM to poke it! But I meant poke it (just sounded better than say No!) if he was telling you to attend a function to dine out a Station or Garrison Comd!

I am a great advocate of and fully suupport Mess life and have been to nearly every Regt Dinner in my time in the Mess, even one that day I had the snip (not a good move the following day mind!)
However, he cannot order you to attend if you wish not too.

And Spanish Dave.....I was not moaning! jusr answering a Crazyk's question.

Had this situation in a previous mess where the RSM kept on calling 3 line whips until an AGC senior NCO dug out some rule stating soldiers could not be forced to attend a function if they were to be out of pocket by attending. The RSM had to call an emergency mess meeting and ask the mess to vote across money to cover the function or else it would come out of his own pocket. No more 3 line whips after that.

thanks for all your comments guys and for the record i've only ever missed 1 function in over 14 yrs as a mess member. What realy gets me is that because of the decline No's attending mess functions, many mess members now live away from their duty station etc, that the cost of attending such functions is going through the roof,so the RSM/Snr mess member decides to get all the mess together and decide (off his own back!! ) that' a perticular function will be compulsary. The way i see it is this... i will gladly attend a mess function of my own free will but if i'm ordered to attend then in that case it should not cost me a penny.

Just go, Get drunk whinge about it later. I have never been forced to go to the mess, been forced out once or twice though

Personally I like going to functions.... after all I forked out for an expensive mess kit..... shame to let it fester in the wardrobe! Its part of what being a senior is all about, ethos, esprit de corps.... and just plane old getting together and having a laugh..... if you've got a good RSM who's got the gift of the gab and a sense of humor it's even better....!

Incidently a '3 line whip' is a parliamentary term..... when an important vote is called in the house the Whips send out memos/notes and finish them of by underlining them 3 times (so i've been told).
