29 to no longer go Commando?

#1
I heard a nasty rumour that 29 Cdo Regt is to lose the Commando role next year. Hopefully this is unsubstantiated. Can anyone shed any light on it?

On that theme, whats the feeling among the gunners of the Yanks hanging onto their battleships for shore bombardment.....yay or nay?

Do 29 not provide Naval Gunfire Observers? Point taken with the airborne gunners. They'll be soooo chuffed.
The glorious 148th of foot are the naval gunfire specialists within 29 cdo and I doubt very much they will lose the commando role as its a specialist role and not really one that can be done by anyone, the same as the Para role.

I left the regt in may this year and there was no talk of losing the commando role then, if anything its being talked of a growth industry with the Iraq, Afghanistan and all the other hotspots to come

It won't happen unless the goverment chuck 3 cdo out of plymouth. Although Devonport dockyard is struggling with obtaining goverment contracts, and is looking at possible future closures since Gordon Browns constituancy in strathcylde just happens to be getting these contracts-what a suprise.
148 battery are forward observers which can deploy on ship, but are separate from 29 cdo, as they're now based with boys in Poole and not plymouth with kirkee and alma batterys.

Makes no odds where the brigade moves to! They tried moving 29 up to Chivenor a few years ago but no accom, quite simply 29 belong to 3 Commando Bde and will stay with them for the long term future.

148 Battery are a part of 29 not separte even though they based in Poole and not Guz!
