Nice wee buck there, pics are always hard to gauge; doesn’t look medal quality but looks to have a bit of weight about it (400g ish)?
When I get the chance this summer I will boil him out and weigh him, he isnt perfect so not a medal head.

Ive only just butchered him, I would have left him hanging for longer but the shepherd wants the chiller for real ale and it cant be that cold.
Is my assumption correct, that your next week's worth of venison suppers was offed with the ammo in the thread title, or are you just using the thread as a depository for hunter porn deer manager blog?

It was indeed, a 140 grain loading of .280/30

And was that the very first time you've hunted with the round?

It seems to have done the job fairly neatly. Does that mean you've concluded the trial or are there more variations to be compared in the field?

No I have used it on quite a few deer so far, I am hoping to improve the load with a heavier bullet this year but at the moment the 120 and 140 grain loading is sufficient for the deer available.

I await further reports with my usual uninformed curiosity :)

Happy hunting :thumright:

Well I managed to boil out the head, drying it at the moment and hope to weigh it later this weekend.
I've been a bit too busy on case conversions from 8mm Mauser to 9.5 for another arrsser but I should get started back with the 280 now the fields are almost all stubble.
The new job is getting in the way and causing me real problems with keepering but luckily I have 2 or 3 volunteers to help with the mundane weekday work and I will set out the new feeder lines on weekends. I will possibly not get the rifle to the Hill this year, disappointing but my health isn't up to it so I may be looking for some less strenuous stalking near Thetford or even in the Borders if there is any red stalking to be had. Hinds are fine I just want to test both my calibres on bigger deer.
I'll possibly book a week and go away November next year hoping I can do it physically. It will be my last year on the hill and I may not be shooting much after that at all with a shotgun thanks to nerve damage n my neck.
To say I am disappointed is quite mild especially as I wanted to build a CSR rig in .280 even if its not me using it or even something for the McQueen!

Dragging this back to the top.

Did you new barrels follow the rifling dimensions and twist for the 280/30 or did you use a different twist etc?

New 20” barrels with 1 in 8 twists
Original ones were 24” 1 in 10

I’ve been fighting cancer since April and it could be a while before I’m well enough to get back to it

ETA: on the plus side I’ve lost well over 11 stones so it’s not all bad

Unfortunately it’s left me as weak as a newborn kitten something the physio nazis don’t seem to understand

I had no idea: keep it up, and good luck.
I have up until recently only told family and close friends and the moderators closed area in case it was worse or didn’t pan out but fingers crossed so far it’s getting better although having my sternum removed in surgery means I may not be able to shoot as I used to sadly

Glad to hear things are progressing well(ish), I keep meaning to ask but I don't like bothering you too much.

Step by step matey.

You've been through the proverbial mill it sounds. Hope it gets better for you from here.

If they weren't nazis you probably wouldn't do it - and they know it;). I know too many people who fecked off the physio as soon as they could and ended up with worse disabilities than they should have.
