26/03/20 RN monitoring Russian Warships in North sea & Channel

Apparently, interestingly 9 RN ships continue to monitor 7 Russian ships in the North sea & English channel.

Its been going on for a least a week however it's highly unusual to be extended for this period.

Nothing to see here, just some Russian Navy sailors on holiday who took their equipment with them.

Quite a major operation.

Royal Navy shadows Seven Russian warships in the Channel and North Sea

As the Royal Navy prepares to help the NHS and other government departments deal with the response to the coronavirus outbreak, nine British ships have been shadowing seven Russian vessels in waters around the UK.

The Navy has completed a concentrated operation to shadow the Russian warships after unusually high levels of activity in the English Channel and North Sea.

Type 23 frigates HMS Kent, HMS Sutherland, HMS Argyll and HMS Richmond joined Offshore Patrol Vessels HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey along with RFA Tideforce, RFA Tidespring and HMS Echo for the large-scale operation with support from NATO allies.

I wonder what the Russians are up to?

I assume routine administrative activities and much training has been stopped as part of the lockdown?

Interesting that we need two tankers to support our ships. Unless the main job is to keep the OPV's on station?

Interesting that the Russian group includes tugs.....

PS. Got your new book the other day, excellent reading so far!

The headline is misleading. It fails to note that the whole crewed Royal Navy is shadowing seven Russian ships :)

Strange as I am sure that’s HMS Echo I have just seen in Plymouth sound, maybe the news is a little old?

First, recent Russian planes activity possibly testing UK air defence response, followed by a maritime extended presence.

Putin continues to be provocative, tactical mind games considering the RN continue Gulf escorting duties.

I wouldn't expect any less from Mr Putin, of course he's going to play silly buggers when our hands are full elsewhere, hence as you say the increased air activity.

Third interception of Russian aircraft in a week

Nothing to see here.
This lockdown has starved the media of anything other than covid related. Russians in the channel / North Sea are their emergency filler go-to.

According to MarineTraffic, she left Plymouth this lunchtime.
It’s Thursday.... the RN goes to war off Plymouth every Thursday ;)
Those pesky Heronians won’t chase themselves away.

I've given you an "informative", just to bluff that I understood.
“Thursday war” is a weekly exercise undertaken by nato ships going through operational sea training...or it used to be anyway. The “Heronians” were the enemy.
Im out of date, @alfred_the_great will know more recent.
