2 pounder A/P

The 2Pdr was used in the Tetrarch light tank. It could be deployed by glider. They didn’t perform too well in Normandy, the 2pdr just didn’t have the punch required. It was replaced by the Locust light tank. Ironically the locust sported a 37mm gun (2pdr is 40mm).

The 37mm had a decent (for its size) HE round and also theoretically canister, no idea if it made it to ETO, but there was more than one Japanese attack that got an unpleasant surprise from it.

One has to remember that there are three different natures to consider:
AP shot, which is solid steel and inert
HE shell, which is thin walled and probably has a quick fuse
AP shell, which has thick walls, a small fuse and probably a delay fuse.

The last one will be rare

I was firing the 2 & 6 & 17 pdr quite often in the 80's - very "interesting" when the round rebounded from the
target and passed the firing point at a great rate of knots ! Rebounding rounds would lie on the ground spinning
like a demented dervish for some minutes after firing.

Sounds great fun, where was this?

How did you fire any of those when the last of them went out of service in the ‘60s?

Proof & Experimental Establishments - 25m ish range. Might have been out of service but we seemed to have lots to conduct trials with. eg testing the effectiveness of new armour against known standards :)

Canister was in US use in ETO for Stuarts M5/M5A1 US2AD used them @ Normandy

25m range is outrageous. Couldn’t do it now.
