17th Madras Native Infantry - Col. J.W.S Butler

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I've recently been asked to locate a service record for a Col. J.W.S Butler. I've discovered that he served with the 17th Madras Native Infantry in India during the 1870s - 1890s. He was born in India but retired to Ireland in 1900. My query is if Native Regiment service records would have been recorded in the UK at the time or recorded in India. If recorded in the UK, is the National Archives the place to start looking for service records for that period? Would a Native Regiment commission be recorded in the Gazette?

If anyone can point me in the correct direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
