170 Infrastructure Support Group if living in Glasgow

Hi folks,

I just moved to glasgow and am looking into joining the reserves as a soldier to make some pals and use my free time productively.

My job is in geotechnical assessment mainly to do with the risks of earthquakes and how strongly they could damage infrastructure.

I've looked about and 170 infrastructure support group of the royal engineers seem like a good fit. From what I gather these guys take on civilians with jobs like mine and let you use them in a military context. They also mention better promotion which sounds good.

I understand there is a reduced training commitment with them of only 19 days per year. But the main reason I want to join is to make some good pals and have some stuff to get up to after work. Considering I would only have to train for two weekends and a 15 day camp, would you say considering say an infantry reserve unit like 6 scots or 4 para be a better option if I want to get the most out of the TA due to this? If anyone is in 170 infrastructure I'd appreciate their opinion on it.

Cheers for reading, any help appreciated

RMR + RAMC in Sunny Govan if you fancy something different, failing that RA RS and BiCs(Hamilton) not bad for a city that had a full inf bde (vr) a long time ago @Boxy for SNIH

Can't help regarding 170 ISG but I was in an STRE (specialist team royal engineers). I've posted previously I used my civi skills, gained military skills and had a great time. Promotion was accelerated BUT I had to work hard to gain the respect the rank carried. I had ample opportunity o attend courses and additional camps with other reserve units and attachments to regular units. I got more involved and went places many regs don' get to see. I also made great friends BUT it was not a weekly thing.

If you want to use your skills maybe consider sponsored unit and something else...gym/car club/camera club etc

If you want to wear dappled green clothes, sit in a hole for two weeks a year and have drinking buddies join infantry or para.
(No disrespect to infantry or paras).

Remember - you have to fit the unit and work at that and.. .gaining drinking buddies is not a given.

****, if you're after drinking buddies in Glasgow just take a walk along Heilmans Umbrella and you'll find about six of them on cardboard boxes near the pub entrance that'll happily bring you into their circle for a bottle of white lightning.

Yeah valid point about the drinking pals not being a given. I didn't consider that. I'll take your advice and supplement the 170 infrastructure with a bit of sunday league footy or something.

Cheers for the help.
