131 Cdo vs 4 Para

After browsing the forum for about a week and trawling through this website called Google, I hope I have searched enough to qualify for posting a newbie question ... :)

So I am thinking of applying for the TA (surprise!) and have narrowed down my options to either 4 Para or 131. I live in SE London and am a technologist by profession, 32.6 yrs old. I intend to join as a soldier as I understand there are more specialist courses available than officers and I can later apply for officer.

Can anyone comment on the training standards of the two (131 vs 4 P), how do they compare in general. Reason I ask is, realising fully TA exist to support reg's I wouldn't want to join just to kick up my feet, have a beer and do nothing. A unit that would push me to limits and shape me into something useful is what I am after. From what I have seen the Cdo training appears to be much harder but I could be wrong.

I will call local units tomorrow to discuss training and prep requirements for each.

... or should I just join my local TA unit and take it from there? I an nearing the age limit and wouldn't want to miss the chance I have now.

Many thanks.

Where to start....

1. 33.6? I can't say for 131 but you may well have left it too late for 4 Para. You have certainly left it too late to consider commissioning.

2. Both units are very good at what they do and have arduous selection processes. If you somehow manage to convince them to let you start, you need to decide whether you want to be an engineer or infantryman.

3. You may be better following the route of joining another unit and then possibly being able to transfer across later as a trained soldier prior to attempting the selection course. Even as a trained soldier you should expect to rejoin a recruit cadre to prepare you.

Thank you for such astonishingly swift responses ...

Apology 1 - I should have supplied beer and popcorn
Apology 2 - The Duke, Sir. Age 32.6, I blame my cat. Sorry

Does #1 above still stand?

For #2 infantryman appeals to me more however as an engineer I can add more value due to my civilian background ... One to mull over and decide

For #3 I like the suggestion thank you! Makes even more sense if I've missed the boat according to #1

I am particularly pleased to hear about the arduous training both have, I find it hard to give up so perfect way to put myself to test...

Sorry again about the elementary mistakes :)

Your age is against you, but you knew that. 4 Para is still infantry, so is your shortest route in terms of getting to Phase 2 training + P Coy, whereas 131 is RE and you would generally need to complete your Combat Engineer course as Phase 2 before completing the All Arms Commando course. Competition for 4 Para places will leave you out of the running on age grounds alone, especially based in London. 131 may prioritise your tech skills, but doubtful. NRC timelines, even if you started today, will prevent any real prospect of completion of Phase 1 before Dec 15 and subject to cap badge Phase 2 unlikely before mid / late 2017, unless you sought DE officer selection. Transfer of cap badge once you were in whilst completing Phase 1 is the only other possibility.

Thanks.
Called 4 Para today no response left a voice message. Will follow up again Mon
Called 131, person I spoke with didn't have info and hadn't been through the process so suggested I turn up on PT day (next Tuesday) for a chat. Which I will do

Try 131, ask for the Recruiting Officer who is a Capt I know quite well and is a very nice chap (no names here for persec). Another thought is to try RMR who used to be based in Bermondsey, although I'm uncertain if the units still active. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Thanks also for suggesting the RMR, spent most of today reading up about them. Their online adviser suggested booking a slot on their presentation sessions ... called up and was told I do not meet the eligibility criteria at 32, seems odd but yes I am at the upper limit and unlikely to be older by the time recruitment process finishes.

So, all focus now on 131 and I am optimistic :)

Thanks again for taking the time to reply and pointing me in the right direction. Will post subsequent updates here

What, you expect someone to be in on a Saturday?

Well, being The Reserves, one would have anticipated the weekends being prime time.

The Government's relying on them so...oh, wait a minute...
