£10bn Aid budget may be spent on defence - Cameron

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. It all depends on what we hope to achieve from our aid money. Bribing foreign despots to buy British and setting up their supply chains so they keep on doing so makes sound sense. Using the same money for more 'stabilisation' by military force hasn't exactly delivered on its promises of late.

it makes more sense to get troops to deliver a truck full of food and make sure its fairly distributed than a vegetarian and truck full of mercs.

at least we know where to send the bill for all that aid dropped on libya now

There is not a hope in hell this will happen. Hollow words. More likely, it will go on welfare or free houses and people carrier's for 'refugees'.
  4. Unless you have strong RoE and a willingness to use overpowering force at the first sign of trouble. Otherwise you end up with the PR disaster that is an Amoured Infantry Group escorting a bunch of trucks held up for days on end by a bunch of drunk thugs.

  5. Carrots Aid money is spent in the best tradition of Altruism - Aid is not allowed to further British interests but is given freely 'cos we are all Guardian readers.

Call me sceptical - but say for example you're about to face some huge costs (renovating house, new car etc) ...when working the budget out, one simply doesn't set aside a significantly large chunk of that money just in case one of your mates gambles his cash away and you fancy giving him a bung, right?

So why on earth do the successive governments - in times of severe purse-string tightening - do they insist on ringfencing a large chunk of public funds "in case" India / Pakistan has a flood?

And why would it be, that since his diplomatic, we're best buds now, special relationship type trip to India - is Mr Cameron now suggesting we can use the Foreign Aid funds on Defence instead (like his f**king voters were telling him 21 months ago).

Could it be that 'Foreign Aid' is simply dressed up as such to avoid it being entitled something like "diplomatic relations fund".

Average Joe Public is fooled so what do they care anyway? I might have got this completely wrong (I trust nobody these days), but as I said - call me sceptical.

  7. It will be used as part of the 'Secret' negotions Mr Dave and Mr Clogg negotiated with their Masters in Brussels. This UK Tax Payers Cash will be used to fund the fledgling New Model EU Peoples Militias - to be officered by Deutcher Offizziers, SNCOs by Les Francais, Cooks provided by La Belle italiannes and of course us Brits will be the Foot Soldiers.

    But I jest........!!
  8. The German version of `Foreign Aid´is to give the Africans enough Mercedes G-Wagons and HK 3´s etc to keep German factories and jobs intact whilst reducing the number of receipients as they tend to kill each other with the freebee weapons!

Bloody clever or what so why don´t we do the same with India etc, give them British produced goods instead of money,oh yeah,we don´t produce fcuk all now do we?

If India wishes to tap into the UK then they should be paying us and not the other way round, what could Britain possibly produce cheaper then they could make themselves in India that they would need anyway,if they can build nukes and rockets they should be able to build just about anything else they need as they don´t give a flying fcuk about copyright either.
  9. At first glance this all seems very positive. More money for defence at a time when the Treasury are testing the waters over more cuts to the MoD core budget. I'll be convinced when the following questions are answered:

    1. Will the MoD budget be 'ring fenced' in the next government spending round? (I'm not holding my breath....)
    2. How much would be forked over from the DfID budget, when will it take place etc.
    3. Exactly what caveats will be placed on what this money can/can't be used for? There has already been talk in the media that any new money could only be spent on 'aid' type projects and not kit/equipment/SLA/SFA etc.
    4. How much of a fuss are Lib Dem MPs going to kick up over this and could they derail it even partially?
  10. There's more chance of the money being delivered to my house in ten pence pieces along with an order to spend the lot on Freddo bars.

I can't believe people are actually discussing it being a possibility.
  11. Because there's still a lot of naive people that believe that this so called Conflict Pool funds will actually be diverted to Defence.

    Yet more PR nonsense.
  12. Jesus, how many more times... Aid budget can't even be termed as "diplomatic relations fund" it's basically bribes to secure future deals. Most of Joe Public, meaning the kind of Joe Public who is actually interested in the world, knows this. And everybody does it. (IE all the big economies.)

Think about it, the Tories are arch capitalists, they are cutting back where they can, ****ing over the young, the disabled, the generally unfortunate, at home. Do you really think they care about the foreign poor if they don't even care about the poor at home who have a vote? It's all about securing trade deals. That is all.

The german government is even more shameless than ours when it comes to bribes.

They are buying deals right left and center. They don't give a shit.

well if we had ring fenced 2 billion for promoting democracy in libya it might have saved a few jobs.
