There have been huge numbers of books recording local rolls of honour. Some of them rather amateurish and poorly produced. Not this one .
- Alex Metler and Gerry Woodcock
The authors of this book have created an excellent snapshot of the Great War in a small community. The book has a short introduction and then devotes a couple of pages to each of the fallen.
One would expect a high proportion of the men to have served in the Devonshire Regiment , however the men of Tavistock also served in the Royal Navy, RGA, the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers ,the London Regiment ,the Army Service Corps, the RFC and the Canadian Army. Ages at death where from 18 to 53 (!).
The book has been published under the auspices of the local historical society. The book has a good list of sources , is properly indexed and Cromwell Press have printed it to a good quality. It will be a useful tool for local historians but also forms a poignant collection of those who travelled far to fight.
The book is available on Amazon from a few sellers but also at A E Mettler, Landfall, Courtenay Rd, Tavistock, PL19 0EE or tel 01822 614773. New book £20 incl p and p. He might be persuaded to sign a dedication !
