'Usurper' is the seventh book in Peter Darman's Parthian Chronicles. Darman is an ex-Defence Intelligence analyst who decided to put his military knowledge to good use and turn his hand to military historical fiction. The Parthian Chronicles is a series of books set in Roman times about a middle eastern King Pacorus. The series has followed him through life from his youth as a royal prince who is captured by the Romans and ends up fighting alongside Spartacus; a great military leader, Pacorus continues as a King in his own right with an army based on the Roman legions.
Usurper sees Darman at his best; he has got the mix of fast-flowing narrative and authentic military action spot on. This book follows Pacorus and his fellow Kings as they journey to Afghanistan for a royal wedding. Luckily, for battle-loving aficianados, disaster strikes and Pacorus is forced to defend the Parthian Empire from a new Eastern threat.
The story grips throughout and the detail keeps the reader in the moment. I read this book in three sittings - always a good sign! There is a good mix of well known characters and new blood which bodes well for future instalments in the series.
The book can be bought in Kindle format for £2.75 and in paperback for £11.76 on Prime.
