- Ludwig Heinrich Dyck,
- ARRSE Rating
- 3 Mushroom Heads
The author has researched and studied this subject in great depth, his knowledge and ability to engage and keep the interest of the reader is accomplished and proficient.
The history travels in chronological order from 391 BC to AD 17 and is well organised, the footnotes contribute additional information to the text and the bibliography is extensive.
The author has relied heavily on the classical writers of the periods which is to be expected, however his use of primary sources is exceptional and his secondary sources are more than enough to support the text.
My only criticism would be that the maps need to be more detailed, other than that it is a must for the student of Roman history and anyone who has an interest in how the barbarians interacted with the Roman Empire.
