England France and Aquitaine

4 Mushroom Heads
An interesting book this, the title is a little misleading as it only starts with Henry Vth and barely mentions the previous events. None the less it covers the remaining period very well indeed. It's a little light on the military side of things, which while a shame is understandable as there is already a great deal of coverage of that side of things. This book instead concentrates on the complex and Byzantine web of alliances, politics and diplomatic in fighting off the battlefield.

For a book of only 273 pages, 43 of which are an excellent bibliography and index it covers this very well indeed. the author writes well and clearly. He also teases apart the very tangled web of alliances, treaties, and double-dealing in a very clear concise and easy to follow way. There's not much in the way of maps or illustrations but those there are well chosen and the maps clear.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the period. It will also be a worthwhile read for the casual reader as it's not overly academic and is not a dry history as some tend to be. I think it deserves 4 mushrooms.
