'Amazon' is the ninth instalment in Peter Darman's Parthian Chronicles series (all the earlier books in the series have been reviewed on this site). Darman continues to deliver in spades, this book has lost none of the zing that made earlier volumes such a success. At the same time, nine books in, like a pair of well loved shoes, we have got used to the different characters and the different angles they bring to the story.

For those new to the series, Darman is a well published author who began his career on the Defence Intelligence Staff; this background means he blends great story writing with gripping military historical detail. The Parthian Chronicles has followed the fortunes of King Pacorus, a middle-eastern king ruling in Roman times, from his time as a young man (in the first book he was captured, enslaved and then fought his way to freedom alongside Spartacus) onwards into middle age and beyond. The first book in the series is now available on Kindle Unlimited if you want to tip your toe in the water without committing!

Yet again Darman has produced a narrative that sweeps the reader along, never pausing for breath. A mixture of palace intrigue, bloody battles and historical nuance, this book mixes all our old favourite characters with some great new baddies, all seamlessly blended into a tale of derring-do.

Thoroughly recommended and perfectly acceptable as stand-alone novel but you will get the most out of it by starting at the beginning of the series! Available from Amazon on Kindle and in paperback.
