Ulster Volunteer Force

Founded in 1913 by Edward Carson to prevent Home Rule in Ireland. Originally comprised many middle-class types and former officers, were involved in a few skilfully executed operations including the Larne gun-running. On outbreak of war in 1914, volunteered en masse for the 36th (Ulster) Division and fought and died in large numbers on the Western Front.
In more recent years, a flag of convenience for the UDA which allowed a group of simian skinheads to justify their involvement in racketeering and occasionally bombing Dublin.
