[edit] Barrack Regime

COs should be guided by common sense and accepted military practice in establishing the day-to-day routine in their units. However, to ensure a common approach the following guidelines are to be applied:

a. Inspections. There is to be a progressive programme of inspections, with the emphasis on cleanliness, hygiene and the condition of issued equipment. Locker inspections are to take place between 0730 and 0800 hrs. Lockers are not to be 'trashed'. Male staff may conduct planned inspections of female recruit accommodation, but must be accompanied by another male or female member of staff.

b. Working Hours. There should be no imposition of work (other than personal administration) or military instructors in recruit accommodation, other than Duty Personnel, after 2000 hrs, except programmed night training. All work is to cease by "lights out" (2300 hrs).

c. Head Dress. Cap badges and berets are to be issued and worn in accordance with Reference A.

d. Private Cars. There should be no restriction on having vehicles in barracks, subject to availability of suitable parking, production of all legal documentation and to immediate banning in individual cases involving the infringement of motoring regulations/laws.

e. Joining Instructions. ITG Recruit Joining Instructions are to be issued. These are personalised for each unit. Any such items required (e.g. locker padlocks, cleaning materials, coat hangers) should be held in NAAFI/unit shops available for purchase on joining, expenditure upon them being kept to a sensible minimum. All items required, or recommended to be purchased, (e.g. tracksuits) are to be consistent with those which are accepted for use in the Phase 2 and field force units to which the recruit may be posted. The purchase of items which are available on service issue (e.g. PT kit, training shoes); which may not be necessary (e.g. an iron per man); or which should be purchased by the COs or Unit Public Fund (e.g. barrack cleaning materials) is not to be ordered.

f. NAAFI. Access to the NAAFI Shop facilities is to be unimpeded from initial joining. Access to the NAAFI Club during evenings is permitted at the discretion of the Coy Comd commenurate with the requirements for administration and preparations for training the next day. Restrictions on access to the NAAFI Club can be used as additional related training. Coy Comds may delegate this authority to pl comd/pl sgts. The consumption of alcohol on unit premises is restricted as follows. For CMS(R) TA normal legal restrictions are to be placed upon the purchase and/or consumption of alcohol. COs may at their own discretion impose a 2 pint rule in line with Government recommendations and as taught in the Health and Hygiene (Substance Misuse) lecture of CMS(R) TA Training.

g. Bedding. During CMS(R) TA Training issue bedding is to be used by all recruits.

h. Bull. The "cardboarding" of kit, or any comparable "traditional" practice associated with inspections (and in particular the purchasing of a second set of equipment /clothing /washing kit etc for "display") is prohibited. The use of starch is to be confined to shirts only. The starching of combat clothing is forbidden.

i. Personal Items. There should be no restriction on the possession of family photographs, radios or similar personal effects, subject to sensible use of space/convenience of others in the room.
