A few possibilites are suggested for why Spam might be associated with Americans

• Spam = Uncle Sam(?).
• SPAM = Spastic Plastic American Motherfucker
• Because of the canned pink stuff supplied under Lend-Lease - as Eisenhower wrote in a letter to the manufacturers just after the end of WW2, "Thank you for your services - we're only sorry you sent so much of it" or words to that effect.
• The canned pink stuff 'SPAM' is an acronym for Selected Processed American Meats - S.P.A.M.
