Snort
From ARRSEpedia
Snort - using a snort mast to provide oxygen to diesel engines in an conventional submarine to allow recharging of batteries. Snort masts are raised whilst the boat is submerged and allows the boat to remain generally concealed during a particularly vulnerable time.
Snorting is uncomfortable in heavy seas as the boat is subject to wave motion and if the snort mast is covered the diesels suck up all the air in the boat, resulting in painful eardrums due to air pressure changes.
On the other hand, snorting creates a breeze trhrough the boat (air in and out), refershing oxygen and removing odours. Thus diesel submariners are slightly less smelly than they used to be. See also "submariner's dhoby"
